Late Goal Sends Hoyas Past Falcons

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team used a late goal to down the Bowling Green State University Falcons 1-0 in Georgetown's final nonconference match of the season on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-4-2 overall and the Falcons drop to 2-4-3 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Today was a game that we survived. Bowling Green is a really good team, and we put them on the schedule because they are an NCAATournament-caliber opponent and I thought they carried a lot of the game today. It took us a long time to get any kind of rhythm and to get the game to look like we were at home and playing to our capacity, but a lot of that has to do with what Bowling Green was throwing at us. Overall, it was great to find a win when we didn't play our best game.
How it Happened
  • Georgetown had the first good opportunity as junior Marlon Tabora sent it in and freshman Jacob Murrell was at the back post ready to receive but he slipped on the slick grass allowing the Falcon keeper to make the save.
  • In the 42nd minute, it was BGSU with an impressive look as a shot from point-blank range clanged off of the post and the rebound was blocked by Zach Zengue on defense to keep it scoreless at the break.
  • The Falcons looked dangerous early in the second half as the game opened up.
  • Midway through the half, the momentum shifted to Georgetown and the Hoyas had two golden opportunities go wide.
  • Following some late subs, Georgetown managed to gain control on a long ball by senior Daniel Wu. Junior Kyle Linhares saw the opportunity for a quick throw and got it to freshman Jacob Murrell who left it for Tabora at the top of the box. His shot was saved, but the rebound went to freshman Jack Panayotou who sent it back in to put the Hoyas on top 1-0 with six minutes remaining.
  • Some big defensive stops and a late goal sailing over the crossbar for BGSU concluded the match with the Blue & Gray on top 1-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Bowling Green 13-9, and the Hoyas had four on goal while the Falcons managed three.
  • GU was awarded two corner kicks to BGSU's three in the game.
  • Hoya junior Ryan Schewe took the win in the net and tallied the Blue & Gray's three saves in the match.
