Georgetown Downs Butler 3-2 in BIG EAST Action

WASHINGTON – It was a wild opening minute, but the Georgetown University men's soccer team picked up a crucial 3-2 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Wednesday evening at the Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Bulldogs move to 6-3-1 for the season and 2-1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Our response to adversity was really good today. It feels like we're growing up as the season progresses, we're getting more experienced and applying things better. Going into a place like Butler, against a good team and finding a way to carry a game and get three points is outstanding and that's the evolution we've been hoping for."
How it Happened
  • It took just 15 seconds for the first goal of the game as sophomore Kieran Sargeant sent a ball to the back post to junior Kyle Linhares who sent it in to put the Hoyas on top 1-0.
  • Another goal would come in the first minute of action as Butler answered right back on the other end of the pitch to tie the game up with 89 minutes to play.
  • The Bulldogs looked dangerous 15 minutes in, but it was freshman Jack Panayotou who had a shot clang off of the crossbar as the Hoyas battled back.
  • Butler took the lead in the 18th minute, but the Hoyas came back as sophomore Blaine Mabie scored his first-career goal on a ball from Jacob Murrell to tie the game at two in the 22nd minute of action. That score would stand at the break.
  • Both teams searched for the go-ahead goal in the second half, but it was Gerorgetown that had more opportunities.
  • In the 73rd minute, junior Trevor Burns took it down the left side and slid it to the center of the box. He found a charging Marlon Tabora who expertly finished into the back of the net to make it 3-2 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
  • In the final minutes of action, the Bulldogs looked for the equalizer which almost came as a shot hit off of the crossbar. However, the Hoyas hung on for the 3-2 result.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Butler 17-12, but the Hoyas had four on goal while the Bulldogs managed six.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks to BU's seven in the game.
  • Hoya junior Ryan Schewe took the win in the net and tallied the Blue & Gray's four saves in the match.
