WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team picked up the 1-0 victory over the Providence College Friars in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-4-3 overall and 3-1-1 in league play, while the Friars are now 3-4-5 for the season and 1-2-3 in the BIG EAST.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Providence is always one of the most difficult opponents on our schedule and I thought we put together a really good performance. We played well in the first half, but we didn't generate enough shots. In the second half, the guys executed a ton and we had 10 corner kicks and 11 shots but we still had to figure out how to find a goal, which we eventually did. Credit to the guys for putting together a really solid performance on both sides of the ball against a great team."
How it Happened
- Georgetown looked dangerous early as Kieran Sargeant had an early run and the Hoyas searched for the first goal of the match.
- The Blue & Gray controlled possession and tested the Friar defense, but could not find an answer as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
- The second half belonged to the Hoyas as Georgetown spent a majority of the minutes threatening.
- A shot from junior Marlon Tabora resulted in a world-class save from PC keeper Rimi Olatunji who kept it scoreless.
- Following a flurry of corners and multiple chances, Sergeant was taken down in the corner of the box resulting in a penalty opportunity for the Blue & Gray.
- Senior captain Aidan Rocha stepped up, and buried it confidently to put the Hoyas on top 1-0 in the 85th minute.
- The defense would stand strong in the final five minutes as the Blue & Gray held on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Providence 15-5, and the Hoyas had five on goal while the Friars managed just one.
- GU was awarded 10 corner kicks to PC's four in the game.
- Hoya junior Ryan Schewe took the win in the net with one save for the match.
