Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Blank Pirates 2-0

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the Seton Hall University Pirates 2-0 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-4-3 overall and 5-1-1 in league play, while the Pirates are now 6-2-6 for the season and 3-1-4 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I thought the guys had a really good mentality with this challenge today. Seton Hall came in with only one loss on the year and tied with us for the top of the table so it was a huge game for big picture stuff for us and for the league. Getting the first goal was awesome, and Marlon (Tabora) continues his incredible productivity. But navigating a season always asks you to get results against teams that are in good form and finding three points against a team like Seton Hall is massive as we look to our larger goals."
How it Happened
  • Both teams had chances early on, but neither looked particularly
dangerous as the squads settled into the match.
  • Midway through the first half, Georgetown began to find space in the final third to start testing the Seton Hall defense.
  • A long ball to the corner from junior Kenny Nielsen was tracked down by a Pirate, but the clear was deflected by Kieran Sargeant. The sophomore sent it across the box and found junior Marlon Tabora who finished with the low shot to make it 1-0 in the 31st minute.
  • Georgetown continued to look dangerous following the goal with another opportunity coming just minutes later following a strong run from sophomore Ronan Dillow, but the chance was stopped by SHU keeper Hannes Ronnholmen to keep it 1-0 at the break.
  • The Blue & Gray searched for the second goal, and it almost came 15 minutes in when a shot by senior captain Aidan Rocha clanged off of the post.
  • As the game got physical, Seton Hall turned it on and a dangerous sequence resulted in a Pirate shot going off of the crossbar.
  • Georgetown keeper Ryan Schewe would prove to be the hero with save after save in the net as Seton Hall began to pressure.
  • The game changed in the 84th minute as a flick pass from Tabora sprung freshman Jacob Murrell who got past the defense and lofted a crafty ball over the keeper's head and into the back of the net to make it 2-0 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown and Seton Hall both had 13 shots, while they also matched with six on goal apiece.
  • GU was awarded eight corner kicks to SHU's two in the game.
  • Schewe took the win in the net with six saves for the match.
