WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the No. 9 Xavier University Musketeers 3-0 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-4-3 overall and 6-1-1 in league play, while the Musketeers are now 9-1-5 for the season and 3-1-4 in the BIG EAST suffering their first defeat of the year. Additionally, Georgetown has clinched the top seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship as well as at least a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "I was really proud of our guys today. Xavier is ranked in the top ten for the reason, they haven't lost all season for a reason so they made it really hard. They're athletic, they're very tough and press really hard making it uncomfortable for you and I think our guys managed that as well as could be expected. To score three goals against a team that has only conceded eight all year is a real accomplishment. I'm really proud of the guys for finding a way through that game."
- "It's been a scrappy group in a funny way. From January to now, there was a sense of maybe something to prove? We had the benefit of our calendar date being uncircled. As we lost to St. John's and we were 1-4-2, suddenly people forgot about what we were capable of. I think guys have been living up to their potential. That JMU loss was the low point of the season, and I think the guys handled it really well and away we went."
How it Happened
- Georgetown dominated possession early, but the difference came in the 16th minute when sophomore Kieran Sargeant had his legs taken out in the box resulting in a penalty kick.
- Senior captain Aidan Rocha stepped up against the imposing Cole Jensen. The shot was good, but Jensen saved it. The rebound bounced back, and Rocha sent it in to make it 1-0.
- The Hoyas were buzzing with a number of good chances, but could not find the back of the net making it 1-0 at the break.
- Early in the second half, it seemed as Xavier was gaining momentum.
- However, 15 minutes in, the Blue & Gray began to look dangerous and leading scorer Marlon Tabora was active. He slipped a ball through to freshman Jack Panayotou who finished with a hard shot to the corner putting the Hoyas on top 2-0.
- The Blue & Gray added an insurance goal in the 77th minute when junior Kyle Linhares knocked a ball to sophomore Ronan Dillow who managed to bounce it to freshman Max Viera wide open. Viera fired to the far post to make it 3-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Xavier 19-13, and GU managed 10 shots on goal to XU's seven.
- The Blue & Gray was awarded five corner kicks to the Musketeer's one in the game.
- Junior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe took the win in the net with five saves for the match.
