No. 24 Georgetown Downs Marquette 1-0

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team defeated the Marquette University Golden Eagles 1-0 in GU's final BIG EAST Conference home matchup on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-4-3 overall and 7-1-1 in league play, while the Golden Eagles are now 4-9-4 for the season and 0-5-4 in the BIG EAST. Additionally, Georgetown has clinched the top seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship as well as outright the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "It wasn't a great performance today, and you have to give Marquette a ton of credit. As a team, to come in with nothing to play for, we told the guys all week that they were very good and they caused huge problems for us. Our performance is as much of an indicator of their performance as anything else. We had five guys that blocked shots today, and sometimes that is how you win games. It's not always about connecting 15 passes and scoring a great goal, but putting your body in front of a shot to get the shutout. The guys are starting to take a lot of pride in being hard to score against, which feels more like what we're used to."
How it Happened
  • Marquette looked like the stronger side for the first 10 minutes of the match with two dangerous shots that Hoya keeper Ryan Schewe was forced to stop.
  • Despite MU threatening, it was Georgetown that got on the board first as freshman Jacob Murrell sent it to classmate Jack Panayotou at the endline. Panayotou kept it in under pressure and slid it across the goal finding the foot of sophomore Blaine Mabie who buried it in the 14th minute.
  • Marquette went right back to it forcing Hoya saves off of the line and hitting the post on a beautiful counter, but Georgetown held on for the 1-0 score at the break.
  • The Golden Eagles controlled play early in the second half, however Georgetown had the first good look as a header from Murrell clanged off of the near post.
  • As Marquette looked to score, the post denied the Blue & Gray for a second time when a wide open shot from Kyle Linhares was stopped.
  • The Hoyas would hold on in the final minutes resulting in the 1-0 decision.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Marquette 20-9, and GU managed four shots on goal to MU's three.
  • The Blue & Gray was awarded three corner kicks to the Golden Eagles' four in the game.
  • Schewe took the win in the net with three saves for the match.
