Hoyas Fall to Creighton in BIG EAST Championship

BOYDS, MD. – The Georgetown University men's soccer team fell 3-0 to the sixth-seeded Creighton University Bluejays on Sunday morning in the championship game of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship presented by JEEP in Boyds, Maryland at the Maryland SoccerPlex. With the loss the top-seeded Hoyas drop to 11-5-3 overall for the season as they look to continue to play in the postseason.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Funnily enough, despite the scoreline, we actually executed our game plan quite well. Goals change a game, and the first five minutes of the second half where they got the pair of goals that really was the game. We were playing one of the best attacking teams in the country, and they showed that today so I'm not really worried about where we are, but we need to move forward really quickly next weekend and focus on the NCAA Tournament."
How it Happened
  • Junior Kyle Linhares got ahead of the defense and had Georgetown's first solid look early in the game, but it was Creighton (9-4-6) that got on the board first as a corner kick sailed over the defense to the back post, and Alejandro Maillet fired it right back to make it 1-0 in the 10th minute.
  • A header with 15 minutes to go gave the Hoyas life as freshman Jacob Murrell's shot forced Bluejay keeper Paul Kruse to dive to his right to make the save in the air and keep Creighton on top.
  • Creighton would hit the crossbar, and the Hoyas would have a late chance but GU went into the break trailing 1-0.
  • The Bluejays added a second just minutes into the second half as the nation's leading scorer Duncan McGuire found himself isolated and chipped a ball to the far post just out of the reach of Hoya keeper Ryan Schewe to make it 2-0.
  • A minute later, Creighton was at it again as GIorgio's shot was blocked but the rebound fell back to him and he found the back of the net to put CU ahead 3-0.
  • Georgetown would not find a way to score, eventually falling 3-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Creighton,15-13, and GU managed just three shots on goal to CU's eight.
  • The Blue & Gray was awarded nine corner kicks to the Bluejays' three in the game.
  • Schewe took the loss in the net with five saves for the match.
  • Three Hoyas earned spots on the All-Tournament Team as freshman Jack Panayotou and senior captains Aidan Rocha and Daniel Wu were all honored.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will now await their fate in the NCAA Tournament looking for an at-large berth. The 2022 NCAA Tournament Selection Show is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.
