Georgetown Advances to NCAA Second Round With Win Over Navy

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team downed the United State Naval Academy Midshipmen 2-0 on Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Shaw Field. With the win the Hoyas improve to 12-5-3 overall for the season and advance to the second round to face fifteenth-seeded Tulsa on Sunday.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "First round games are always really hard, you have to give Navy a lot of credit since they were the champions of the Patriot League and they made it really hard. They frustrated us over the first half by creating good chances, so keeping it at zero was really important. Finding a way to break through the defense was the key, they have nine ties on the year and we know they were really difficult to bring down so we were happy to get through that and advance."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown dominated possession in the first half as the Hoyas had a shot by freshman Jack Panayotou clang off of the crossbar in the 30th minute.
  • GU continued to push as the ball was knocked around in the box on a number of occasions but the Blue & Gray could not find the back of the net.
  • In the final minutes of the half, Navy (7-5-9) looked dangerous as a long shot from A.J. Schuetz was knocked over the crossbar by junior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe. The teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
  • Navy came out strong in the second half when a perfect run and shot was stopped in the box by the Blue & Gray.
  • The Mids kept pushing, but it was Georgetown that scored first as GU made it 1-0 in the 57th minute.
  • Junior Kyle Linhares served in a ball and found classmate Kenny Nielsen in the box. Nielsen's shot was blocked, but the rebound went to freshman Jacob Murrell who buried it for the goal.
  • GU added the insurance goal in the 70th minute when classmate Zach Zengue laid it off for Murrell at the top of the box. The freshman fired with his left foot to the top left corner making it 2-0.
  • Georgetown continued to battle and confidently held on for the 2-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Navy, 24-4, and GU managed eight shots on goal to two by the Mids.
  • The Blue & Gray was awarded six corner kicks to Navy's three in the game.
  • Schewe took the shutout in the net with two saves for the match.
