BALTIMORE – The Georgetown University women's basketball team downed the Coppin State University Eagles 50-35 on Wednesday morning at the Physical Education Complex in Baltimore, Maryland. With the win, the Blue & Gray improves to 2-1, while the Eagles drop to 1-3.
Head Coach James Howard
- "Today, we had a great start to the game. It was the power start that we've been talking about all summer where we jumped on them early. Now it's learning how to finish and to play 40 minutes. Defensively, I thought we had a great first half, but as we come out of halftime we need to have a different sense of urgency. I was pleased with the defensive effort, but this early in the season we must continue to get better."
How it Happened
- Georgetown came out fired up as senior Jada Claude opened with a triple in the corner.
- From that point on GU never looked back, outscoring the Eagles 17-3 in the first period with stifling defense and hitting from the field.
- Claude bookended the quarter with a bucket for the 14-point advantage after one.
- The second period started the same with a Claude 3-pointer, however, the Eagles looked to get back in the game.
- Graduate student Kristina Moore would turn it on late as she scored seven of GU's final nine points of the period to make it 29-11 at the break
- The Eagles battled through the third quarter, but Georgetown managed to build the lead from the inside as GU was active in the paint.
- A combination of players helped hold the lead as GU had the 42-27 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
- The final period was sloppy as both squads forced turnovers and the action was end-to-end. The Hoyas continued to battle and held on for the 50-35 victory.
Of Note
- Moore led the way with 14 points and a team-best six rebounds in the game.
- Claude and senior Graceann Bennet also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
- Junior Kelsey Ransom was active, scoring six points to go along with six assists and three steals for the Blue & Gray.
- The Hoyas shot 37.0% (20-54) from the field and allowed 23.0% (14-61) shooting by the Eagles.
- Georgetown was outrebounded by Coppin State 42-39, and the GU defense forced 19 Eagle turnovers.
