SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a solid team performance to defeat the High Point University Panthers 67-60 on Saturday afternoon at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico in GU's second game of the Puerto Rico Clasico. With the win, the Blue & Gray improves to 4-2, while the Panthers drop to 1-6 on the year.
Head Coach James Howard
- "It's always good to come to a tournament and win a game. It's hard to bounce back from a loss, so it was great to get the win with back-to-back games. I thought our mindset was better today and we hit some shots which then helped us hold them off on the defensive end. I was proud of our young ladies today, especially Modesti McConnell hitting some big threes for us off of the bench, and finally getting Kelsey Ransom going."
How it Happened
- Georgetown opened the game on an 8-0 run with points in the paint, and stifling defense on the other end.
- High Point would hit a trio of triples in the first period which would allow them to take the 11-10 lead with three minutes to play.
- Strong play in the paint from sophomore Brianna Scott and a 3-pointer from Modesti McConnell would give GU the lead but a late bucket made it 18-17 in favor of the Panthers at the end of the first.
- Junior Kelsey Ransom took it herself early in the second, scoring GU's first six points, but High Point was getting hot from beyond the arc.
- The Blue & Gray would battle and some late buckets from senior Jada Claude would give the Hoyas the 32-30 lead at the break.
- Ransom continued to dominate in the second half as GU built a small lead and even four 3-pointers from the Panthers could not slow GU.
- In the final seconds, a triple from graduate student Kristina Moore made it 49-44 at the end of the period.
- McConnell opened the final quarter with a triple and GU never looked back as the Blue & Gray moved ahead by as much as 14 eventually taking the 67-60 victory.
Of Note
- Ransom led the way with 18 points, while Moore and McConnell were also in double figures with 12 apiece.
- Bennett rounded out those in double figures with 10 points in the game.
- Ransom also led the Hoyas with eight rebounds, while Scott added seven to go along with five points.
- The Hoyas shot 46.8% (29-62) from the field, and allowed 35.7% (20-56) shooting by the Panthers.
- Georgetown forced 10 High Point turnovers on eight steals, and outrebounded the Panthers 36-21.
