Hoyas Fall to Marquette in BIG EAST Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 78-57 to the No. 24/24 Marquette University Golden Eagles on Friday morning in front of a near-sellout crowd at McDonough Arena in GU's annual School Day Game. The contest was also the BIG EAST Conference opener for both squads. With the loss, the Blue & Gray drops to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles improve to 6-2 on the year and 1-0 in the league.

How it Happened
  • In front of a packed house, the Hoyas opened the game with a triple from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy. Marquette took the lead, but a fake and jumper from graduate student Kristina Moore put GU back on top.
  • The Golden Eagles would go on a run moving ahead by as much as 11, however, a steal and free throws from Fauntleroy cut it back to seven.
  • At the end of the first period, MU led 22-13.
  • The Hoyas chipped away at the lead in the second half as the defense slowed the potent MU offense.
  • A quick 5-0 run with a 3-pointer by Moore and a layup from sophomore Kaliyah Myricks cut the lead to six midway through.
  • A late bucket from the Golden Eagles put them up 35-26 at the half.
  • The duo of Moore and sophomore Brianna Scott battled through the third quarter as the pair helped GU keep the deficit under 10 and within striking distance for much of the period.
  • A triple at the buzzer from Scott made it 54-46 in favor of Marquette at the end of the third quarter.
  • Despite battling to begin the final quarter, the Golden Eagles found opportunities to pull away in the fourth making the final 78-57.
Of Note
  • Moore led the way with 19 points, while Fauntleroy was also in double figures with 11.
  • Bennett led the Hoyas with seven rebounds, while Myricks added six.
  • The Hoyas shot 36.7% (22-60) from the field, and allowed 40.6% (28-69) shooting by the Golden Eagles.
  • Georgetown forced 11 Marquette turnovers on eight steals, but were outrebounded by the Golden Eagles 50-34.
