Georgetown Drops a Close One at DePaul

CHICAGO – The Georgetown University women's basketball team battled, but fell to the DePaul University Blue Demons 80-71 on Sunday evening in BIG EAST Conference action at Wintrust Arena. With the loss, the Blue & Gray drops to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons improve to 9-3 on the year and 2-0 in the league.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "DePaul is a tough team to play at home and I thought we competed and gave ourselves a chance to win. Now we need to go back and work on finishing free throws, that was a big difference tonight. A game like this shows us you can never relax and you have to play for 40 minutes. Our team believed they could play with DePaul, and it showed when we went down we managed to come back so I think this game will help us grow and come back better."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened with five quick points, but a 7-0 run would put the Blue Demons on top.
  • The Blue & Gray would battle to keep it a one-possession game midway through on a bucket from junior Kelsey Ransom.
  • Late in the first, DePaul would stage another 7-0 run to lead by nine, however, a 3-pointer by Brianna Scott would end the momentum as GU came back to make it 23-17 at the end of the period.
  • Georgetown would not go away in the second as senior Jada Claude went right into the defense for a pair of layups.
  • Despite DePaul having ample opportunities at the line, Georgetown would remain close as a reverse layup from sophomore Kaliyah Myricks cut the deficit to five with three minutes to play in the half.
  • In the final minute, Ransom would drive the lane to make it a one-point game but four quick points put DPU up 40-35 at the half.
  • Georgetown opened the second half strong as the defense forced turnovers and a layup by Ransom would cut the deficit to one again.
  • DePaul would work it inside late to go up by as much as seven, and at the end of the third period the Blue Demons led 53-49.
  • Georgetown tied it at 55 early in the final stanza, but DPU answered with three-consecutive 3-pointers.
  • Despite a valiant effort down the stretch, GU couldn't find a way to get ahead, falling 80-71.
Of Note
  • Georgetown boasted all five starters in double figures as graduate student Kristina Moore led the way with 16 points, while Ransom had 13 and both freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy and Claude had 12. Senior Graceann Bennett rounded it out with 10 points to her credit.
  • Ransom, Claude and Fauntleroy also led the Hoyas with eight rebounds apiece, while Ransom added six assists.
  • The Hoyas shot 40.6% (26-64) from the field, while allowing 41.4% (24-58) shooting by the Blue Demons.
  • Both teams committed 13 turnovers, and Georgetown outrebounded the Blue Demons 40-37.
