Ransom’s Record Day Downs Mean Green

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the University of North Texas Mean Green 69-44 on Wednesday afternoon in GU's nonconference finale at McDonough Arena. Additionally, junior captain Kelsey Ransom made history tying Georgetown's single-game record for steals with 10 to her credit. With the win, the Blue & Gray improve to 8-4 overall and end nonconference play with a record of 7-2.

What They're Saying
  • "We always try to defend our opposition and we allowed too much penetration and slacked on cuts in that first quarter. The sense of urgency wasn't there. We challenged them to shut them down in the second quarter and I thought they stepped up to the challenge."  - Head Coach James Howard
  • "Defense creates offense, it's great when you can work hard on defense to get something easy on offense. Because we're a defensive-minded team we take pride in that." - Kelsey Ransom
How it Happened
  • North Texas (3-7) opened the game with a 7-3 run and held the advantage for the entire period, going up by as much as seven (19-12) with 2:53 remaining.
  • Over the final minutes, GU scored seven quick points on a layup from sophomore Brianna Scott, a triple by sophomore Kennedy Fauntleroy and a layup from sophomore Kaliyah Myricks to tie it at 19 at the end of the first.
  • The Blue & Gray kept pushing with a 9-2 run in the second, opening with two layups by Ransom, another three by Fauntleroy and a jumper by senior Jada Claude to put the Hoyas on top 28-21.
  • The GU defense would lock down over the final three minutes of the half, which resulted in a 6-0 run on the other end to make it 34-23 going into the break.
  • Claude started the second half with a bucket before the Mean Green could answer back. The momentum was short lived as an and-1 from Bennett sparked a 7-0 run forcing a UNT timeout as the Blue & Gray led 43-25.
  • UNT would attempt a comeback in the third period, cutting the deficit to 13, but a 10-0 run including a pair of triples from Fauntleroy and classmate Victoria Rivera helped make it 55-36 at the end of the quarter.
  • A 6-0 run opened the final stanza as GU had the lead and never looked back, eventually taking the 69-44 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with an impressive stat line leading the team in points (20), rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (10) en route to the record.
  • Fauntleroy was also in double figures with 13 points off of the bench, while Scott had seven boards along with four points on the afternoon.
  • The Hoyas shot 41.3% (26-63) from the field, while allowing 37.0% (17-46) shooting by the Mean Green.
