Hoyas Defeat Xavier for First BIG EAST Win

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Xavier University Musketeers 74-52 on Sunday night at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Blue & Gray head to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers fall to 6-3 on the year and 0-3 in league play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "Kennedy (Fauntleroy) was amazing tonight and she was also efficient, going 11-of-15 from the field. Before the game, I had told the media she had been on a big stage before and she had faced (Xavier's) Fernanda Ovalle in the national championship game in high school so I think she carried that with her today coming out with some vengeance. Getting 28 points from Kennedy obviously helped us on offense, but the defense was great. We took Xavier out of a lot of things that they like to do and made it difficult for them to get quality looks."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the game with a steal from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy who took it all the way and scored on the other end. This was later followed by a strong and-one finish by junior Kelsey Ransom to put the Hoyas back on top 5-3 after a Xavier 3-pointer.
  • The Hoyas then cashed in on their first two threes courtesy of Fauntleroy and graduate student Kristina Moore, putting the home squad up 11-6.
  • Pushing this momentum into a 10-0 run would give the Hoyas a 15-6 lead, and another 10-0 run later in the period capped off by a last-second jumper by Fauntleroy ended the first quarter with a 25-15 Hoya lead.
  • Both teams struggled to score in the second period, with the Hoyas' defensive intensity leading to eight turnovers in the quarter by the Musketeers.
  • A Fauntleroy steal and score for her team-high 14th point put the Hoyas up by 16 late in the period. The Blue & Gray would eventually take a commanding 38-25 lead heading into the second half.
  • A block and subsequent and-one by sophomore Ariel Jenkins would put the Hoyas up 52-32 in the third period as part of a 9-0 run.
  • The Musketeers would not let up, going on a 10-0 run to end the quarter, closing the gap as the Hoyas remained in the lead 52-42 after three.
  • It was the Fauntleroy show in the fourth quarter, as she recorded 10 points on 4-4 shooting and 2-2 on triples in the period as part of her season-high 28-point effort.
  • Commanding the game on both ends throughout the final period, the Hoyas would cruise to a 74-52 victory.
Of Note
  • Fauntleroy led the way with a career-best 28 points, while Ransom scored 13 and Moore 10 to round out those in double figures.
  • Ransom led the Hoyas with nine rebounds, adding four assists and two steals.
  • Jenkins was an anchor off the bench, posting nine points, six rebounds and a career-high four blocks.
  • The Hoyas shot 48.4% (30-62) from the field and 46.2% (6-13) from beyond the arc, while allowing 33.9% (19-56) shooting by the Musketeers.
  • Georgetown forced 21 Xavier turnovers on 11 steals, and outrebounded the Musketeers 42-32.
