Hoyas Can’t Hold on at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell by a tough 72-62 decision to the Seton Hall University Pirates on Wednesday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Walsh Gymnasium. With the loss, the Blue & Gray drops to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "To be on the road and to be able to come back from being down early, I was really proud of the effort that we showed to take the lead. I hope we can build on the fight and effort we showed to learn how to win games against good teams. Their veterans made some big plays to get them back in it, Lauren Park-Lane willed them to a win."
How it Happened
  • Seton Hall (10-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) opened the game with a 6-0 run, forcing a Hoya timeout. The Hoyas battled back to cut the lead to three, 13-10, on a triple from senior Jada Claude.
  • The Pirates began to heat up from downtown to move ahead by as much as 12 forcing another timeout from the Blue & Gray.
  • The Blue & Gray would continue to battle but trailed 27-18 at the end of the first period.
  • A 3-pointer from sophomore Ariel Jenkins made it an eight-point game early in the second quarter. Jenkins would continue to work and a triple from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy would cut it to five with three minutes remaining in the half.
  • SHU answered, but Jenkins was dominant down low, ending the half with a pair of buckets to make it 35-32 in favor of the Pirates at the break.
  • The Hoya defense was impressive in the second period, allowing just eight points from Seton Hall and not allowing a field goal for the final 8:34 of the half.
  • Georgetown fought for a go-ahead bucket in the third, but every time GU had momentum SHU would have an answer.
  • At the 2:44 mark, a put-back from Claude would tie the game at 46 and in the final minute, a triple from sophomore Brianna Scott gave GU its first lead of the game.
  • With one second to go, junior Kelsey Ransom sank a jumper to make it 51-48 in GU's favor to end the third period.
  • The Pirates staged a 17-2 run in the fourth quarter and the Hoyas were never able to recover despite a valiant effort down the stretch.
  • Georgetown eventually fell 72-62.
Of Note
  • Jenkins led the way with a career-high 18 points to go along with a squad-best seven rebounds in the contest.
  • Claude and Fauntleroy were the other two Hoyas in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Ransom managed an all-around game with eight points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Fauntleroy also had four steals in the game.
  • The Hoyas shot 36.4% (24-66) from the field, while allowing 47.5% (28-59) shooting by the Pirates.
  • Georgetown forced 15 turnovers on seven steals, but was outrebounded by SHU 41-34.
