WASHINGTON – Georgetown softball headed into its second day of Coastal Carolina's Kickin' Chicken Classic on Saturday when the team faced East Carolina and Coastal Carolina for the second time this weekend. The squad opened the day with a well-earned win over East Carolina University (3-2) and a loss to Coastal Carolina in the bottom of the seventh inning (13-9).
How it Happened
vs. East Carolina
- Second up to bat Savannah Jones hit a home run to put the Hoyas up 1-0 in the first inning.
- ECU was able to answer Jones' hit in the second when Logyn Estes tripled to right field to send Ragan Holloman over home to level the score for the Pirates.
- East Carolina's Jocelyn Alonso singled later in the inning to send Estes home, putting the Pirates up 2-1 over Georgetown.
- With limited action into the fifth inning, Cassie Henning made contact with the ball sending it down the right line giving Alyssa Chavez the opportunity to tie the ballgame 2-2.
- Forced into extra innings, Georgetown had bases loaded when ECU earned an error advancing Brittany Lew home which secured the Hoyas' win over the Pirates and their first win of the 2022 season.
vs. Coastal Carolina
- The Hoyas scored four runs in the first two innings as Kayla Dunn advanced on an error to send Jones home (1-0), Mae Forshey was hit by the ball from the Chanticleers' pitcher which progressed Alyssa Chavez home (2-0), and the runs three and four were both results of Abby Smith and Dunn being walked (4-0).
- Coastal came back to tie the game by the start of the fourth, but Georgetown found its groove and went up by three runs, leading 9-6 by the end of the inning.
- The Chanticleers were not out though as they had three home runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings with Coastal Carolina's shortstop Abbey Montoya hitting a walkoff grandslam to end the game 13-9.
Georgetown plays Purdue tomorrow, February 13 at 10 a.m.
