Hoyas Can’t Hold on in Double Overtime Loss to DePaul

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team led much of the way, but could not hold on after two overtimes to fall 105-104 to the DePaul University Blue Demons Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Hoyas fall to 7-15 on the season and 2-12 in conference play.

How it Happened
  • Georgetown came out hot working down low with freshmen Ariel Jenkins and Brianna Scott giving the Blue & Gray the lead.
  • DePaul (20-7, 12-4 BIG EAST) would keep it within a possession until late in the first period when sophomore Kelsey Ransom created turnovers which turned into points on the other end as Georgetown managed the seven-point lead.
  • A late triple by the Blue Demons would make it 22-18 at the end of the first.
  • Graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris started the scoring in the second quarter followed by back-to-back putbacks from senior Shanniah Wright to build the lead to 10.
  • The Blue Demons kept fighting back, but Georgetown always had an answer including a triple from Bolden-Morris at the 4:39 mark to put GU ahead by 11.
  • DePaul cut it to four in the final minute of action, but on the last play of the half graduate student Mary Clougherty stole and pass and sank a jumper as the buzzer sounded to make it 43-37 at the break.
  • Georgetown continued to push in the second half. Despite DePaul cutting it to two, the play of Wright down low helped the Blue & Gray build back the 10-point advantage.
  • Bolden-Morris began the final stanza with back-to-back triples forcing a DePaul timeout and giving GU the 67-60 advantage.
  • The Blue Demons answered with a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the game as it would be a battle through the final period.
  • In a three-minute span there were seven lead changes and three ties as the squads traded baskets.
  • In the final minute it was Ransom who took over and gave the Hoyas the lead on a bank in the lane. However, DePaul would tie it at 85 at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
  • In the first extra period, DePaul pulled ahead by four, but the Hoyas came back to tie it at 94 on a drive from Ransom and a layup by senior Jillian Archer with 45 seconds remaining. The winning shot would not come for either team resulting in a second overtime period.
  • A three-point play from Ransom early in the second overtime put GU on top, however, DePaul staged a 5-0 run to regain the lead.
  • Despite the effort, Georgetown would not find its way back and even a 3-pointer from Bolden-Morris at the buzzer was not enough as GU fell 105-104.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with a career-high 29 points to go along with nine boards and three steals.
  • Georgetown boasted five players in double figures with Wright and Jenkins having career days scoring 18 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Bolden-Morris tallied 18 points, and Archer managed her fourth double-double of the season on 14 points and 15 rebounds.
  • The Hoyas shot an impressive 51.2% (42-82) from the field and allowed 46.8% (36-77) shooting by the Blue Demons.
  • Georgetown outrebounded DePaul 45-38, and the GU defense forced 15 Blue Demon turnovers.
  • The 100-point performance was a milestone for the Hoyas as Georgetown has not had a 100-point game since defeating Mount St. Mary's 104-80 on November 24, 1998.
