Hoyas Shut Out St. Francis on Day One of Furman Classic

Greenville, SC – The Georgetown softball team played two games on the opening day of the Furman Classic in Greenville, South Carolina on Friday. After a 7-3 setback to South Dakota to open the day, Georgetown came out victorious going up three runs over the St. Francis Red Flash (3-0).

How it Happened
vs. South Dakota
  • The Coyotes opened the scoring quickly as Jordan Pender knocked a home run with the bases loaded to give South Dakota a quick 4-0 lead.
  • Graduate student Abby Smith had the retort as she homered to left center field to get the Hoyas on the board.
  • The Hoyas saw their next run in the fourth inning when graduate student Alyssa Chavez hit a ball to center field allowing Gianna Sciullo to cross home (4-2).
  • Pender found the bat again in the fifth as her hit added two more on the board for the Coyotes (6-2).
  • Trailing 7-2 and with the bases loaded, the Hoyas were able to snag one last run from a fielding error by South Dakota's shortstop to end the game 7-3.

vs. St. Francis
  • The game went scoreless and hitless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Georgetown loaded the bases. Mae Forshey stepped up to the plate to get the ball into the gap between shortstop and the centerfielder which advanced Stephanie Grissom home.
  • Abby Smith then followed with a single to left field as Sophia Scarangella scored (2-0).
  • Chavez was walked in the fifth progressing Georgetown's loaded bases forward allowing Cameron Kondo to earn Georgetown's final run of the game (3-0).
