Georgetown Drops Home Finale to Villanova

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 73-61 in its home finale to the Villanova University Wildcats on Tuesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 7-18 on the season and 2-15 in conference play.

How it Happened
  • Georgetown came out hot as freshman Ariel Jenkins and graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers.
  • The Hoya defense was relentless and forced stops, while the offense came up big in the paint and with penetrating drives.
  • Villanova (19-7, 13-4 BIG EAST) sank a triple at the buzzer to move ahead 16-13 at the end of the first stanza.
  • The lead went back and forth in the second quarter until a block from Jillian Archer led to a bucket from the senior on the other end as Georgetown managed to four-point advantage.
  • Late in the period, a Briana Scott putback sparked a 5-0 run including points from sophomore Kelsey Ransom as Georgetown led 27-20.
  • A 7-0 Wildcat run would tie it up once again, but free throws from junior Graceann Bennett and a late putback from Archer put the Blue & Gray on top 31-27 at the break.
  • After trading points early, an 8-0 Wildcat run would break the game open in the middle of the third period.
  • A block from Bennett turned into a three-point play for Archer in transition as the Hoyas cut it to 44-37.
  • Villanova would build the lead back up but five points to end the quarter from Mary Clougherty, including a step-back triple, made it 55-46 at the end of the third period.
  • Bennett began the final stanza with a layup, but a 6-0 run allowed the Wildcats to pull away and the Hoyas would never recover eventually falling 73-61.
Of Note
  • Archer led the way with 18 points, while Clougherty added 11.
  • Bolden-Morris added five points and team bests with six rebounds as well as three steals.
  • The Hoyas shot 37.7% (20-53) from the field and allowed 37.9% (22-58) shooting by the Wildcats.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded by Villanova 41-33, and the GU defense forced 19 'Cat turnovers.
  • The contest was a makeup from a game that was originally scheduled for January 9 and was postponed due to COVID.
