Hoyas Down Xavier 54-40

CINCINNATI – The Georgetown University women's basketball team picked up the 54-40 victory over the Xavier University Musketeers on Friday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Cintas Center. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-18 on the season and 3-15 in conference play with just one league game remaining.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "This was great for both the players and the staff. We've been playing some tough teams really competitively the last four or five games, and we needed a win going into Sunday. No matter the opponent, any win on the road in this league is good so I'm proud of our players and we are going to stay focused and try to play even better come Sunday."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas took a small lead on the play down low as freshman Ariel Jenkins, sophomore Kelsey Ransom and senior Jillian Archer all took it to the rack.
  • The press forced XU turnovers, which turned into points as a late triple from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris made it 13-12 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the end of the first period.
  • The Musketeers (9-18, 4-14 BIG EAST) would come back and regain the lead midway through the second quarter as the Hoyas went cold.
  • In the final two minutes of the half, a jumper from junior Graceann Bennett and another 3-pointer by Bolden-Morris gave Georgetown the 23-21 advantage going into the break.
  • The Blue & Gray led by as much as six midway through the third stanza thanks to a beautiful cut from Archer. However, Xavier had an answer with five quick points to cut the lead to 28-27.
  • A follow-up shot from graduate student Mary Clougherty would be the difference sparking a 9-0 run led by Archer's play in the paint as Georgetown built its largest lead to that point and forced an XU timeout.
  • The Hoyas would hold the 39-29 lead at the end of the third and add four more points to begin the final stanza as GU pulled away.
  • Georgetown would not look back as Xavier tired and Bolden-Morris continued to hit.
  • GU cruised to the 54-40 victory.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris led the way with 21 points hitting a career-high seven triples.
  • Archer added a double-double with 13 points and an impressive 12 rebounds as well as two steals.
  • Bennett had a solid performance with four points and nine rebounds in the win.
  • The Hoyas shot 30.8% (20-65) from the field and allowed just 25.5% (12-47) shooting by the Musketeers.
  • Georgetown outrebounded Xavier 51-41, and the GU defense forced 23 Musketeer turnovers.
  • The win snapped an eight-game streak for the Hoyas.
