Hoyas Dominate to Take Series Against Norfolk State

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team provided a well-rounded outing in the series finale against Norfolk State, knocking off the Spartans, 15-7, on Sunday afternoon and picking up its first road nonconference series win since 2014. The Hoyas jump to 3-3 on the season while the Spartans fall to 1-5.

"Huge series win for our organization to find a way to come out of there with a victory today. It's the first time since 2014 we have had a road nonconference series win. It's hard to win, especially against a team that made the NCAA Tournament. We had a big seven-run inning in the second but the biggest part of the game was when they scored five and we bounced back. Angelo Tonas, Ayden Head, Marshall Whitmer, to come in and get out of jams like they did, gave us everything we needed. Great series win and we are looking forward to playing some home games this week." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's win.

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Georgetown's pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, seven of which came off of starter Kyle Salley's hand.
  • Carson Frye, Whitmer, Head, Andrew DeRoche and Tonas put together a stellar 5.1 innings of work out of the pen, allowing a combined three hits and striking out eight.
  • Andrew Ciufo led the way with three hits on the afternoon, logging a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Adam Dapkewicz went 2-for-5 at the dish, driving in a game-high three tallies while touching home twice.
  • Matt Stone put forth a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
  • Eight of the team's nine starters scored a run, six of which recorded two apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following a scoreless first, the Hoyas unloaded seven runs on the Spartans in the second. Dapkewicz smacked an RBI single to right-center to drive in Owen Carapellotti before Stone scored on a passed ball to take a 2-0 advantage. After back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Cam Meyer and Ethan Stern, Ciufo slapped an RBI single to left. On the same play, the Hoyas capitalized on Norfolk State's error in left field, scoring two more to take a 7-0 edge.
  • The Spartans responded two innings later with a five-run fourth, slashing Georgetown's lead to two (7-5).
  • Georgetown bumped its lead back to six with a four-run top of the fourth. Dapkewicz smacked a bases-loaded, two-run single through the right side before Georgetown successfully attempted a double steal that scored Stone from third. Two batters later, Hyde launched a double to right field and gave GU an 11-5 lead.
  • In the sixth, Carapellotti knocked Ciufo in on a single to right-center, taking a seven-run edge (12-5).
  • After a two-run seventh by the Spartans (12-7), the Hoyas put a three-spot on the board in the ninth. Stern laced a single through the left side, causing Norfolk State to record its fourth error and scoring two runs on the play. Ubaldo Lopez drove in Stern on a groundout to third for the final run of the contest (15-7).
  • Tonas closed the door on the Spartans in the ninth, striking out Cody Donnell to end the game.
