Georgetown Comeback Falls Short at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team made a second-half comeback, but it was not enough falling 76-57 to the Villanova University Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at Finneran Pavilion in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 7-12 on the season and 2-9 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Villanova (15-6, 9-3 BIG EAST) owned the first quarter as the combination of Lior Garzon and Maddy Siegrist had the GU defense on its heels.
  • A drive from senior Jillian Archer and a triple by graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris gave the Blue & Gray energy, but the Hoyas could not match the Wildcats' scoring. The Hoyas trailed 30-9 at the end of the first period.
  • In the second stanza, Villanova went cold and five quick points from graduate student Mary Clougherty and senior Shanniah Wright cut it to 15.
  • It was Georgetown that continued to fight in the second period outscoring Villanova 16-9 thanks to six points from sophomore Kelsey Ransom.
  • Thanks to the late buckets, the Blue & Gray trailed 39-25 at the break.
  • The Blue & Gray would continue to battle in the third as the team cut it to 12 on two occasions.
  • Midway through the period, Clougherty and Ransom combined to make it 49-37 as GU searched for the comeback.
  • It came late in the third as freshman Brianna Scott knocked down and triple and Bolden-Morris added one of her own. On the other end, Bolden-Morris stole the ball and was fouled sending her to the line.
  • In the final second of action, VU hit a buzzer beater to make it 59-47 going into the final period.
  • Archer hit the triple and Bolden-Morris followed that up with a jumper in the lane as the Blue & Gray inched closer, 61-52, and forced a VU timeout.
  • Despite the momentum, the comeback would not be completed as the Wildcats answered on the other end and managed to pull away.
Of Note
  • Bolden-Morris led the way with 14 points, while Archer and Ransom were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Ransom led GU with five boards and four assists, while Bolden-Morris added three steals to her stat line.
  • The Hoyas shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field but allowed 43.1 percent (28-65) shooting by the Wildcats. Georgetown was outrebounded by Villanova, 46-27, and the GU defense forced 13 Wildcat turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will be back at McDonough Arena on February 9 against the Seton Hall University Pirates. Student fans are encouraged to attend, there will be limited attendance allowed. The opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
