Hoyas Drop Close Game to Seton Hall

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost 60-50 to the Seton Hall University Pirates on Wednesday evening at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Hoyas fall to 7-13 on the season and 2-10 in conference play.

How it Happened
  • The game began with strong defensive play, but the Hoyas were able to score the first two baskets of the game with senior Shanniah Wright's layup from down low and sophomore Kelsey Ransom's jump shot.
  • Baskets were hard to come by for both teams with a combined 11 first-quarter turnovers, but Wright's jump shot in the paint gave the Hoyas a narrow 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Eight of the 10 points the Hoyas had in the quarter came in the paint.
  • Both teams traded baskets early in the second quarter, with graduate student Mary Clougherty feeding senior Jillian Archer on the pick and roll for an easy layup.
  • Seton Hall pulled even at 12 with the first three-pointer of the game, but graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris answered with a jumper from the elbow to regain the Blue & Gray's lead.
  • Going into the half, the teams began trading threes, as graduate student Kaylin West hit the Hoyas' first and Bolden-Morris added another. The game was nip and tuck by halftime, with the Hoyas holding a slight 22-20 edge.
  • Seton Hall started the third quarter strong, finding open cutters under the basket to take an early lead.
  • Ransom immediately erased the lead, fighting through contact to earn a three-point play. The Hoyas continued to draw Pirate fouls, earning them seven trips to the free throw line in the quarter.
  • The Pirates were able to find the bottom of the net as the quarter drew to a close, opening up a 43-35 lead.
  • Georgetown began the final quarter getting to the charity stripe, pulling to within four with free throws from Bolden-Morris and Ransom.
  • The Hoyas continued to use their inside game to keep it close but ultimately could not make up the deficit, falling by the final score of 60-50.
Of Note
  • Archer recorded her second career double-double on the Hilltop, finishing with 11 points and a season-high 16 rebounds.
  • Ransom added a balanced 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, finishing 6-9 from the charity stripe on the night.
  • The Hoyas put together a solid defensive effort, outrebounding the Pirates 45-39, forcing 13 Seton Hall turnovers, and holding them to just 33.9 percent shooting from the floor.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will head back to the road as they face St. John's on Friday evening at Carnesecca Arena. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
