Georgetown Falls to Seton Hall in BIG EAST First Round

NEW YORK – Despite a valiant effort to keep pace down the stretch, the 11th-seeded Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 57-53 decision to the #6 Seton Hall University Pirates in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Hoyas close the season with a 6-25 record.

ON THE RECORD
"I'm proud of them. I'm proud of the fight. I'm disappointed that we didn't have the year I would have liked but you still have to be proud of the fight we gave. We could have easily let go of the rope and called it a night but we never did that."
- Head Coach Patrick Ewing on tonight's game

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Aminu Mohammed led three in double figures with his 11th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Hoya freshman shot 4-of-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the line while dishing out three assists.
  • Collin Holloway added 11 points, four boards and two steals for the Hoyas.
  • Donald Carey rounded out those in double figures with 11 points while recording four rebounds, three assists and a trio of steals.
  • Timothy Ighoefe tallied 13 rebounds and matched a career-high four blocks to go along with a pair of steals.
  • The Hoyas outscored the Pirates off turnovers (14-10) and in second chance points (16-6).
  • Georgetown outrebounded Seton Hall by 14 (48-34).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the Pirates putting the first points on the board, the Hoyas rattled off 13-straight points to jump out to a 13-4 edge (14:19). Mohammed sparked the run with six straight while Collin Holloway and Carey each capitalized on SHU turnovers to close out 13 unanswered.
  • Seton Hall closed the gap over the next seven minutes but a quick 6-0 run fueled by a Carey four-point play reclaimed a nine-point advantage (24-15; 5:46).
  • Georgetown would lead by as many as 10 in the first frame but the Pirates wouldn't go away and picked up seven unanswered as the Hoyas went into the break with a 27-24 lead.
  • Both teams traded buckets to start the second but back-to-back triples from Tyler Beard and Holloway pushed the Hoya lead to 37-33 (15:04).
  • A Mohammed layup gave the lead back to the Hoyas and Kaiden Rice drained a 3-pointer to extend it to four (46-42; 7:03).
  • With the momentum swinging back to the Pirates, Holloway's layup with 1:05 on the clock pushed GU back on top 53-52. However, the Hoyas could not hold on as Seton Hall tallied five points down the stretch to knock off Georgetown 57-53.
