Baseball Stunned at No. 24 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK – Despite an offensive onslaught with four Hoya homers, the Georgetown University baseball team was stunned, 10-9, by No. 24 Maryland in the final inning at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Friday evening. The Hoyas fell to 8-5 while the Terps moved to 11-2.

"A great Friday night of baseball between two teams in the area. Unfortunately, we came up a little short but I am proud of our guys and our fight. Great way to come out and play a top 30 team, it's just unfortunate we came one-run short but it doesn't stop what our offense did. Jake Hyde, Andrew Ciufo, Ethan Stern and Andrew Bergeron did a great job. On the road against a team like this, it was a hard-fought, competitive game and we will regroup and be ready for Sunday." - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's game

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jake Hyde remained hot, falling a triple shy of the cycle and extending his hitting streak to 13 games. The sophomore went 3-for-5 on the day and scored two runs. The Hoya right fielder also jumped out to a seven-game multi-hit streak.
  • Ethan Stern recorded his third-straight game with a home run and reached base for the 13th-straight contest, going 1-for-3 with two tallies and three RBIs.
  • Andrew Ciufo logged his second grand slam of the season with his lone hit of the day.
  • Andrew Bergeron recorded his second homer of the year with his only base knock.
  • Carson Frye dominated in his two innings of work, allowing just one unearned run on no hits while striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hyde rocked the first pitch he saw in the opening frame, launching a rocket to straightaway center for a 1-0 edge.
  • Maryland quickly responded in the home half of the first with three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
  • After a leadoff single by Hyde, a Cam Meyer double and a walk to Stern to load the bases in the top of the third, Ciufo quieted the crowd when he drilled a 1-2 pitch to left for his fifth homer of the year, lifting the Hoyas to a 5-3 advantage.
  • The Terps responded with one in the bottom of the third before the Hoyas put a three-spot on the board in the top of the fourth. Stern launched a three-run shot after a Blum double and a Meyer walk to take an 8-4 lead.
  • Bergeron responded to Maryland's one-run fifth with a solo shot in the sixth to keep a four-run advantage (9-5).
  • Maryland tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh before hitting a walk-off two-run homer in the ninth to stun the Hoyas (10-9).

UP NEXT
The Hoyas will look to bounce back when they return to action on Sunday, March 13 for a 10 a.m. contest against Cornell at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
