Carapellotti’s Four-Hit Outburst Lifts Hoyas to 9-6 Win Over Villanova

WALDORF, Md. – The Georgetown University baseball team picked up its first BIG EAST win of the season behind a career night from Owen Carapellotti as the Hoyas knocked off the Villanova Wildcats 9-6 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday. Georgetown jumped to 17-9 overall with a 1-0 record in conference play while the Wildcats dropped to 7-14-1 with a 0-1 BE mark.

"A great win to open up BIG EAST play. Our bullpen was lights out. Ayden Head and Anthony Redfern were electric in the back end of the game. Offensively, freshman Owen Carapellotti had a special day at the plate. We had a phenomenal team approach, got the stops we needed and we found a way to get it done. " - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on today's conference win

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Carapellotti fell a single shy of the cycle with his 4-for-4 day at the dish, smacking two solo homers, a double and a triple to go with five RBIs and three runs scored.

  • Eze produced a 3-for-4 outing in his first start at third base, hitting a solo homer and scoring two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a one-run second inning by VU, the Hoyas responded with back-to-back solo jacks from Ciufo and Carapellotti to give Georgetown a 2-1 edge.
  • Villanova took a 3-2 lead on a two-run homer of their own in the top of third.
  • The Hoyas tied the game at three in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Carapellotti to the left center gap, bringing Ciufo around to score.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats scored three runs to take a 6-3 advantage.
  • Georgetown responded quickly once again with a four-run bottom of the fifth. After a Lopez RBI single through the left side, Carapellotti legged out a two-run triple to tie the game at six. GU capitalized on a Wildcat error in the ensuing at-bat and took a 7-6 lead.
  • Eze extended the Hoya lead to two (8-6) with a solo shot to left for his third of the year.
  • With his final shot at the cycle, Carapellotti instead launched his second solo shot of the day to right field and boosted GU to a 9-6 advantage.
  • Head and Redfern dominated out of the bullpen over the final 4.1 innings, allowing just three combined baserunners to lift Georgetown to its first conference win of the season.
