Hoyas Earn Third Shutout, 28th Win in 9-0 Victory over Penn State

BOWIE, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team picked up its third shutout and 28th win of the season with a 9-0 victory over Penn State at Prince George's Stadium. The Hoyas jumped to 28-19 overall while the Nittany Lions fell to 23-22.

"What a dominant performance from our pitching staff to throw a shutout against a Power 5 team that is playing really well in the Big Ten. Really pleased with the start from Collin Garner and the bullpen behind him was great. Offensively, guys like Jake Hyde, Ethan Stern and Andrew Ciufo all had solid days with a great approach at the plate. Not much more to say other than a great win for the program" - Head Coach Edwin Thompson on tonight's win

HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Hyde tied Kurt Kaull's program record in total bases (139) after his 3-for-4 performance at the dish. The Hoya designated hitter slapped a pair of singles and a double to go along with two RBIs and two tallies.
  • Stern extended his reached base streak to 24 games, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
  • Ciufo also smacked a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in a run against Penn State.
  • Cam Meyer rounded out those with multi-hit performances, logging two base knocks and a run scored.
  • Garner picked up his second win of the season, allowing just two hits across four innings and striking out a pair.
  • The Hoya bullpen combined to allow no hits across five innings of work while allowing just five walks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a pair of blank innings to open the game, the Hoyas tacked on three runs in the third behind RBI singles from Hyde, Stern and Tony Barreca (3-0).
  • With two outs in the second inning, Penn State registered its eventual final hit of the contest as Garner went on to retire seven straight batters through the fourth.
  • The Hoyas unloaded six runs on PSU in the home half of the fourth. Ciufo started the inning with an RBI two-bagger to left center, followed by a one-run double from Hyde to give GU a 5-0 lead. Georgetown scored again on a Penn State miscue before a bases-loaded walk to Ficca pushed the Hoya edge to seven (7-0). After plating one on a double play, Owen Carapellotti laced a single through the right side for a 9-0 advantage.
  • From that point on, the combined effort of Andrew Williams, Anthony Redfern, Marshall Whitmer, Michael Willis and Kyle Salley shutdown the Nittany Lion lineup, allowing no hits in the final five frames for the team's third shutout of the season.

OF NOTE
  • In four games at Prince George's Stadium this year, the Hoyas have tossed three shutouts.
  • The 2022 squad tied the 1983 team for second-most victories in a season with 28.
  • Georgetown snapped Penn State's six-game winning streak and halted Matt Wood's 26-game hitting streak.
