Men’s Soccer Announces Season Award Winners

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team announced the recipients of the team awards for the 2021 campaign. The Hoyas had an impressive year winning the regular season and BIG EAST Championship as well as advancing to the College Cup for the third time in program history. Sean Zawadzki was honored with two awards this season and the Hoyas also announced a new award named after longtime Field Manager Luis Mendez.

Sean Zawadzki
Midfielder
Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls
  • Zawadzki was a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American as well as a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist.
  • He was also the 2021 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year as well as a First Team All-BIG EAST selection.
  • The midfielder started all 22 games for the Blue & Gray and has one goal with four assists on the season for seven points.
  • The two-year team captain was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week twice this past year.
  • In his career, Zawadzki started in 70 of 78 games played and tallied four goals as well as seven assists for 15 points.
  • He was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree as well as being named United Soccer Coaches All-East Region in both 2020 and 2021.
  • In his time on the Hilltop, the Hoyas advanced to four NCAA Tournaments, three-consecutive NCAA quarterfinals, two College Cups and won the 2019 NCAA Championship. Additionally, the squad won two regular season BIG EAST titles as well as three BIG EAST Championships.
  • The psychology major graduated in December with his degree.
  • He signed a professional contract with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Most Improved Player

Marlon Tabora
Forward
Rockville, Md. / Winston Churchill
  • The sophomore appeared in all 22 games with one start to his credit.
  • Was Georgetown's third-leading scorer with four goals and six assists on the season for 14 points.
  • Scored the game winner at Creighton in the 90th minute, as well as in the win over Providence in the NCAA Tournament where the forward managed three goals and one assist in the game.
  • Tabora was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on November 29 and earned a spot on the BIG EASt Weekly Honor Roll on September 20.
Luis Mendez Award
Selected by their peers, this award is given to the player whose dedication to the team is exhibited through selfless actions and giving to others.


Aidan Rocha
Midfielder
Brookeville, Md. / St. John's College High School
  • Started in all 18 games he appeared in after suffering an injury forcing him to miss the first four games.
  • Scored a goal and an assist on the season for three points for the year.
  • Tallied the game winner in the 110th minute in a 2-1 victory over St. John's during the regular season.
Georgetown went 18-3-1 on the season spending the entire year nationally ranked and sitting as high as No. 1 at times. The Hoyas boasted the MAC Hermann Trophy winner, three All-Americans and nine All-BIG EAST selections, including two major award winners. A pair of Hoyas also earned United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America honors.

The team had five players signed by professional clubs.
