Hoyas Fall in Overtime in BIG EAST Championship

DENVER – The Georgetown women's lacrosse team had an amazing first half, but could not hold on falling 16-15 to the University of Denver Pioneers in overtime in the championship game of the BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver. The Hoyas finish the season with a mark of 9-9 overall.

On the Record
  • "I want to give credit to Denver, they played a hard game and are a quality team. I'm really proud of our effort today, but what I'm most proud of is the growth of this team both on and off of the field. We came a long way this season and I think that showed giving ourselves a chance to win a championship. It's disappointing to lose, but the outcome doesn't take away how proud I am of this team." – Head Coach Ricky Fried
How it Happened
  • Denver opened the scoring, but senior Jordyn Sabourin answered back to spark a 3-0 run for the Hoyas who were buzzing early.
  • The squads would trade goals throughout the rest of the quarter as freshman Emma Gebhardt tallied back-to-back scores.
  • A late turnover and Pio score tied the game at five, but on the ensuing draw, the Hoyas won it and a behind-the-back shot from sophomore Kylie Hazen connected to make it 6-5.
  • Senior Ali Diamond scored early in the second period, but the Pios had a retort. Graduate student Erin Bakes would come down and find the back of the net with a goal of her own before a pair of Hoya free position goals made it 10-6 late in the period.
  • The Hoyas added another going coast-to-coast as they took it up the field and Bakes connected to force a Denver timeout and get the GU faithful on their feet.
  • Scores from both sides made it 12-7 at the break.
  • Denver scored early in the third period before graduate student Mary Pagano hit the free position goal at 12:13. The Pios would come back with two more to make it 13-10.
  • The Pios continued the comeback to begin the fourth with two quick goals before sophomore Tatum Geist connected on the free position.
  • Denver would score two more to tie the game at 14, and then add the go-ahead goal on a man up possession at 4:34.
  • The Hoyas did not get down and instead answered back with a goal from Sabourin on the assist from Bakes to tie the game at 15 with 1:09 left.
  • On the ensuing draw, sophomore Emma Driggs pulled it in and Fried called timeout to set up a play but GU would not get the goal sending it into overtime.
  • Both teams had chances, and junior goalkeeper Emily Gaven came up with some big saves but Denver managed to find the back of the cage first as GU fell 16-15.
Of Note
  • Bakes led the way with three goals and as many assists, while Hazen and Gebhardt also tallied hat tricks.
  • LizaBanks Campagna was impressive on the circle with five draw controls, and senior Ellie Kiernan added two caused turnovers.
  • Gaven took the loss in goal with 11 saves for the Hoyas.
  • Georgetown was outshot by Denver 38-24, and pulled in 13 draw controls to the Pioneers' 23.
  • Three Hoyas were named to the all-tournament team as Diamond, Pagano and Campagna were selected.
