2022 Positional Preview: Quarterbacks

WASHINGTON – With less than three weeks until the 2022 season kicks off on the road against Marist on September 3, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each position with this edition featuring the team's quarterbacks.

"The older quarterbacks are the conduits between the coaching staff and team," Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach Rob Spence said. "They play a very important leadership role, are the playmakers on offense and should be able to have a feel for what each receiver should do in order to make necessary adjustments."

The Hoyas are carrying four slingers on the roster and are expected to be led by senior Pierce Holley with fellow senior Tyler Knoop, sophomore Connor Katz and freshman Danny Lauter rounding out the depth chart.

"We have a quarterback that has a fair amount of experience in Holley," Spence said "He had a lot of game experience last year and has been in the program for three full seasons, continuing to show a lot of improvement and developing into a really good player."

The Colorado native has played the most out of the four as he saw action in six games last season, registering 98 completions for 1,295 passing yards and five total touchdowns. Holley also threw the second-most passing yards in a single game in program history with 403 yards against Columbia (Sept. 21).

Knoop adds "another element to the offense. He has a totally different skill set and yet has the ability to throw the ball." The Texas native played in one game under center last year and he went off for 122 rushing yards and a touchdown against Morgan State (Nov. 20).

Katz and Lauter also bring athletic ability and strong work ethic behind the offensive line, expecting to be the next men up to run the offense. Katz appeared in two games last season for the Hoyas while Lauter enters his first year following a strong playoff run to the Mike Silipo Class A Bowl with Brunswick High School.

"We have to play consistently well if we are going to improve as a program," Spence added. "We've had some really good play by our quarterbacks since I've been here. If we are going to have a top-flight program, the quarterback position has to be consistent and dependable on top of being a great leader."
