2022 Positional Preview: Wide Receivers

WASHINGTON – With the 2022 campaign creeping closer and the Georgetown University football team opening the season at Marist on September 3, GUHoyas.com will take an in-depth look at each position with this edition featuring the team's wide receivers.

"We want to be the most respected group in the Patriot League as a wide receiver unit," Thames Jr. added. "Our group name is 'D.A.T. Way', something they came up with themselves; D is for discipline, A for accountability and T for toughness. That's something they wanted to hone in on and they've made it easier for me as a coach because of the way they hold themselves to the standard."

The Hoyas will welcome back two of the conference's top receivers in Joshua Tomas and Cameron Crayton. The duo finished 2021 ranked second and third in receiving yards per game, averaging 76.7 and 75.6, respectively.

Tomas is coming off an All-Patriot League First Team selection in 2021 as a wideout and was named to the 2022 preseason team as a return specialist. He racked up 1,096 all-purpose yards last year, pushing his career total to 3,248 and ranking fifth in GU history. The Illinois native is chasing program leader Luke McArdle with 4,629 (2000-03) while also looking to move up the receiver ranks with 128 receptions (T-6th), 1,639 receiving yards (7th) and 10 scores (T-9th).

"I'm expecting a lot out of these two guys this year," Thames Jr. said. "For those two, they are usually on the same page because they have been here a long time together, have played a lot of games together with the same system and that gives them an advantage. They will open the opportunities for whoever the third or fourth receivers are on the field."

Crayton can crack the program's top 10 this season, posting 1,139 receiving yards on 81 receptions and seven scores in his time on the Hilltop. The Texas native is coming off a career year in Blue & Gray, reeling in 45 catches for 756 yards and four touchdowns. Against Columbia (Sept. 25) last season, he cracked the program's top five for most receiving yards in a game when he racked up 190.

Georgetown's leading receivers will have "one of the deepest, most talented receiving groups," featuring returners Brock Biestek, Asante Das, Ben Fewell, Dorrian Moultrie, Dontae Owens, Cam Pygatt, Tiy Reed and newcomers Jimmy Kibble, Carter Phillips and Keynan Richardson-Cook.

Wide Receiver Highlights
  • Biestek, Das, Moultrie and Reed all saw significant action in 2021, combining for 648 yards on 57 receptions and a pair of scores, all of whom can have "a breakout season this year."
  • Fewell, Owens and Pygatt were crucial in adding versatile threats in both receiving and non-receiving roles for the Hoya offense that ranked second in the Patriot League with 253.7 passing ypg.
  • Kibble captured All-District and All-Region honors as a wideout with Loudoun County HS, registered 892 all-purpose yards to go along with nine total touchdowns, two interceptions and a forced fumble in his final season
  • Phillips earned a spot on the All-Interstate Athletics Conference (IAC) First Team as a TE in 2021 with Landon.
  • Richardson-Cook brings athleticism and skill to the Hilltop, earning a First Team Class AAA All-West Virginia selection and Lootpress Wide Receiver of the Year honors at Woodrow Wilson HS.
