Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2/4 Hoyas Fall to No. 7/9 Pitt in Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/4 Georgetown University men's soccer team scored early but could not find a second, falling 2-1 to the No. 7/9 Pitt Panthers in the 2022 season opener on Thursday at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Hoyas are now 0-1 on the season, while the Panthers start the year 1-0.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "The result was really disappointing because of how the game went. We had our chances at the end to at least tie, if not win. To go in with a group of new guys against a team as talented as Pitt on the road with that type of atmosphere is a difficult task, but it also gave us some positives to take away. I feel sorry about not getting result, but I feel good about the performance tonight."

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring in just the fifth minute as junior Kyle Linhares sent a corner in, and he found junior captain Kenny Nielsen in the middle of the box who shot low with his right foot to make it 1-0.
  • Less than 30 seconds later, the Panthers answered right back as a long ball was deflected and lofted to the back post to even the scoreline.
  • Pitt kept pushing, adding a second goal in the 11th minute shooting to the top center to make it 2-1 in favor of the Panthers.
  • The chances would be few for the Blue & Gray for the remainder of the period as Georgetown went into the half trailing by one.
  • Graduate student captain Ethan Koehler came up with a number of big saves in the second half to keep it a one-goal match as the offense searched for the equalizer.
  • Georgetown dominated possession late, and had chances in the final 15 minutes but could not connect to eventually fall 2-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown and Pitt both managed 14 shots as the Hoyas had five on goal, and the Panthers tallied seven.
  • GU was awarded nine corner kicks to Pitt's two in the game.
  • Koehler took the loss in the net, despite managing five saves for the evening.
