Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Tie High Point, 1-1

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/4 Georgetown University men's soccer team played the High Point Panthers to a 1-1 draw in the 2022 home opener on Sunday at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are now 0-1-1 on the season, while the Panthers start the year 1-0-1.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
"There is a lot to be happy with, we generated a ton of chances and I think the only disappointment is that we left the game too tight. It felt like one goal might have been enough, but when you play a team like High Point, they have really good players, and to their credit they hung in there. They had one chance and finished it brilliantly, so you have to give them a ton of credit for the result. We're a work in progress, I'm happy to see us carry a game like that but now it's a question of if we can put teams away."

How it Happened
  • Georgetown controlled the pace in the first half as GU dominated possession.
  • Late in the period, the Blue & Gray managed a flurry of shots and a wide open net. However, the shot was hit softly and the Panthers came up with a team save to keep it scoreless going into the break.
  • The second half opened with the Panthers' best chance to that point heading in off of the kickoff and forcing sophomore Luca Ulrich to come up with his first save of the game.
  • Minutes later, it was High Point again as Ulrich was active and defender Kenny Nielsen had a huge defensive play to stop the Panthers in the box..
  • The game changed in the 59th minute off of a setpiece when the service of freshman Jack Panayotou went to the back post and senior Aidan Rocha, the captain, sent it back across the face and found the feet of freshman Jacob Murrell who buried it for his first-career goal on the Hilltop.
  • The Panthers came right back just five minutes later, Tony Pineda sailed in a beautiful goal to the top back corner to even it up once again 1-1.
  • Georgetown would search for the equalizer, but it never came resulting in the 1-1 draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot High Point 19-5 as the Hoyas had five on goal, and the Panthers tallied two.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks to High Point's one in the game.
  • Ulrich took the draw in the net, one save for the contest.
