Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 21 Georgetown Falls to No. 14 Maryland

WASHINGTON – The No. 21/7 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the No. 14/19 University of Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 1-2-2, and the Terps improve to 3-1-1 on the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I thought the second half was great, that we played some of the best soccer of the year. We came out knowing we needed goals and they felt like they could equalize but we just ran out of time today. We challenged our guys at halftime and I thought they responded really well. Give Maryland a lot of credit for their first half, they came out and ran the game how they wanted it to be run. The first half was one of the more disappointing halves we've had, which is a combination of Maryland being really good and me needing to retool a few things."
How it Happened
  • A foul in the box gave Maryland the early penalty opportunity as Malcolm Johnston buried it to make it 1-0 in the seventh minute.
  • The Hoya defense stood strong, but struggled to put things together on the offensive end.
  • In the 30th minute, the Blue & Gray gave away the ball in the box and Nick Richardson shot on the open net to make it 2-0.
  • That score would stand at the half.
  • Both teams had possession in the second, but it was Georgetown with the best looks as a shot from freshman Jack Panayotou hit the crossbar and the Hoyas began to look dangerous.
  • In the 78th minute, freshman Jacob Murrell took a ball just outside the box and slipped it to classmate Jack Panayotou. Taking a quick touch, Panayotou got past the defense and found the back of the net to make it 2-1 as the Hoyas were looking aggressive.
  • The Hoyas would keep pushing, but never found the tying goal as the Blue & Gray fell 2-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Maryland 18-14 as the Hoyas had six on goal, and the Terps tallied eight.
  • GU was awarded seven corner kicks to Maryland's two in the game.
  • Sophomore Luca Ulrich took the loss in the net for the Hoyas with five saves in the contest.
