Hoyas Hold On for 2-1 Victory Over Creighton

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team held on to pick up the 2-1 win over the Creighton University Bluejays in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the victory, the Hoyas improve to 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-0 in league play, while the Bluejays move to 3-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Today was exactly what we needed. I think we've been playing really well this year and not getting results. You have to point to guys making plays in both boxes, we were working really hard in the attacking box, we scored two goals from a yard out which is a good sign. But I also think we made some plays in the defensive box. Ryan Schewe was magnificent in goal, and our backline came up with some big blocks. We were playing against a team that is arguably one of the best teams in the league and one of the best teams in the country, so to be able to scrap and to fight and get a result when we've been on a slide is really fun to see from the guys. I'm hoping they can take some of this mentality into the second half of the season."
How it Happened
  • Creighton looked the more dangerous team for the first 15 minutes as three dangerous shots all sailed wide of the goal.
  • The Blue & Gray struggled with possession as the Hoya defense was forced to come up with block after block to keep it scoreless.
  • In the 38th minute, sophomore Kieran Sargeant dribbled through traffic to the endline and sent a ball to the back post to an unmarked Daniel Wu who snuck in behind the defense. The senior captain hit a perfect header into the back of the net to put the Hoyas on top 1-0 which would stand at the half.
  • Georgetown continued the momentum in the second half as the Hoyas searched for a second goal. A foul in the box looked as though the Bluejays would have the first goal of the second half, however, junior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe made a brilliant stop to his right on the penalty kick to keep the Blue & Gray on top.
  • Georgetown would add one more in the 68th minute when a ball from junior Kyle Linhares went to the back post, and freshman Jacob Murrell was there to head it past keeper Paul Kruse making it 2-0.
  • The two-goal lead would not stand for long as CU was awarded a second penalty kick just a minute later, and Giorgio Probo buried it to put the GU advantage back to one.
  • In the final minutes, furious shots from Creighton would not connect as the Hoya defense came up with big stops to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Creighton 27-21, but  the Hoyas had 12 on goal and the Bluejays managed nine.
  • GU was awarded 11 corner kicks to CU's four in the game.
  • Schewe took the win in the net and tallied the Blue & Gray's eight saves in the match.
