Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 19 Hoyas Play No. 20 Pioneers to a 1-1 Draw

WASHINGTON – The No. 19/9 Georgetown University men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie against the No. 20/RV University of Denver Pioneers on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the draw, the Hoyas advance to 1-1-2, and the Pioneers move to 3-0-1 on the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I was pleased with how we were able to meet the challenge of Denver. They are a really good team, I think a top 10 team, and the way they do it is with effort and toughness and handling the details along with good players on top of that. We did a lot of things how we wanted in the first half and it was frustrating that we lost a goal because a lot of things were in our favor. Today, we were asked the question 'are we up for a fight?' and I think the guys responded really well."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown controlled the pace early and got into the box, but neither team was particularly dangerous until two thirds of the way through the first half when the Hoyas started searching for the first goal.
  • It would come in the 29th minute when senior captain Aidan Rocha laid it off to junior Marlon Tabora at the top of the box. Tabora hit a perfect ball and it sailed to the bottom of crossbar and ricocheted in to give the Blue & Gray the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Pioneers answered back off of a setpiece in the 40th minute. A ball was sent in, and Jason Belloli managed to head it to the post and sneak it in, to tie the game at one which would be the score at the break.
  • The second half started in a similar fashion as both teams had spurts of possession but neither generated dangerous chances.
  • With 20 minutes remaining in the game, Denver pressed forward but could not find the back of the net.
  • The Hoyas controlled possession late in the match, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Denver 18-14 as the Hoyas had two on goal, and the Pioneers tallied five.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks to Denver's three in the game.
  • Graduate student Ethan Koehler took the tie in the net for the Hoyas with four saves in the contest.
