Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Defeats DePaul, 87-73

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a total team effort to defeat the DePaul University Blue Demons 87-73 on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Blue & Gray improved to 9-9 overall and 2-7 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "Tonight we started the game like we had started at UConn, with intent. We were focused and locked into the defensive game plan, and anytime you do that it gives us a chance. We also had great balance, scoring 87 points tonight. When we win against good teams, the two guards are having a good night and they combined for 40 tonight. We also knew we wanted to attack the post, and Graceann Bennett had a great night for us. Adding in the balance from Kristina Moore and Brianna Scott, that always gives us a chance to beat anyone. I was proud of their effort and now we need to refocus and get ready for a tough Providence team on Saturday, but bring that same type of focus and energy."
How it Happened
  • DePaul (11-8, 4-4 BIG EAST) opened the scoring, but Hoya freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy was hot early hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to put the Blue & Gray on top by one.
  • Midway through the first quarter and looking at a two-point deficit, a layup from graduate student Kristina Moore sparked a 6-0 run.
  • The Blue Demons answered, but sophomore Hoya Brianna Scott nailed a pair of triples on GU's next two possessions to make it 20-16 with 2:44 remaining.
  • A last second layup from DePaul made it 22-20 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the end of the first stanza.
  • DePaul would regain the lead early in the second quarter, but a trey by Moore ignited the crowd to put GU on top by one.
  • It would be a back-and-forth battle through much of the quarter, but a 5-0 run with a triple from Scott and a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining from junior Kelsey Ransom tied the game at 30 at the half.
  • Georgetown buried two quick buckets to open the second half, and led by four on a Ransom jumper at 8:16. However, DePaul would answer with a three before Moore stepped up to hit back-to-back 3-pointers fueling a 10-0 run and forcing a pair of Blue Demon timeouts in the process as GU led 54-43.
  • The Blue Demons clawed their way back, but the Hoyas held the 59-54 advantage at the end of the third.
  • DePaul cut the lead to four in the fourth, but a 9-0 run from the Hoyas brought the crowd to its feet making it 71-58.
  • The Blue Demons would never find an answer as the hot-handed Hoyas cruised to the 87-73 victory.
Of Note
  • Fauntleroy led the way with 25 points including a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the arc.
  • Senior captain Graceann Bennett tied her career high with 18 points as well as a squad-best nine rebounds in the game.
  • Rounding out those in double figures was Ransom with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals as well as Moore tallying 12 points on 3-for-5 shooting from three-point land.
  • The Hoyas shot 47.6% (30-63) from the field, GU's 87 points were a season high.
  • The Blue & Gray allowed 45.0% (27-60) shooting by the Blue Demons.
  • The Hoyas outrebounded DePaul, 39-32, and forced 11 Blue Demon turnovers on five steals.
  • This was the first win over DePaul since February 16, 2018 and the first home victory over the Blue Demons since January 23, 2010.
  • It was also just the fourth for the Hoyas in program history and the first by a double-digit margin.
