PROVIDENCE – The Georgetown University women's basketball team got a big day from junior captain
Kelsey Ransom as the Hoyas defeated the Providence College Friars 61-51 on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Alumni Hall. With the win, the Blue & Gray improved to 10-9 overall and 3-7 in BIG EAST play.
Head Coach James Howard
- "When we made a run in the first quarter, we got off to a good start and I thought that set the tone. Any good team is going to make a run, but we withstood it taking the lead into the half. Our two guards were very effective tonight and when they are scoring, we typically win. I was proud of our team, especially in that fourth quarter where we stretched the lead to 20. To beat a team the caliber of Providence, who has some good wins this year, on the road you need solid defense and I think our scout was great in doing that. We took them out of what they wanted to do and were able to get the win."
How it Happened
- Ransom started it out as the Hoyas opened on a 6-0 run. Providence (12-9, 3-7 BIG EAST) would answer, but the GU defense proved smothering for the remainder of the quarter.
- The Blue & Gray would go on a 10-0 run including eight points from freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy as the Hoyas led 16-4 at the end of the first stanza.
- Providence came out fired up in the second staging a quick 11-2 run to pull within three, 18-15, midway through.
- A bucket from Ransom would end the run, and the squads would battle down the stretch as GU clung to the 26-20 advantage at the half.
- Ransom was impressive in the first with 12 points, six rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist in the first 20 minutes of action.
- Georgetown went to work in the third and a triple from Fauntleroy made it a 14-point game and forced a Providence timeout to regroup.
- Providence would cut it to seven a number of times late in the third period, however, the defense came up with some big stops.
- The play from Graceann Bennett down low bolstered the squad as GU led 47-35 at the end of the stanza on a banked in triple from graduate student Kristina Moore.
- Ransom and Fauntleroy would continue to push in the fourth quarter as the Hoyas cruised to the 61-51 victory.
Of Note
- Ransom led the way with 25 points including a career-best 12-21 performance from the field. She also tallied her second-career double-double with a squad-high 10 rebounds as well as four steals in the contest.
- Fauntleroy added 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals, she was 3-6 from beyond the arc.
- The Hoyas shot 42.2% (27-64) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 34.7% (17-49) shooting by the Friars.
- The Hoyas outrebounded Providence, 42-35, and forced 23 Friar turnovers on 12 steals.
