Hoyas Defeat Pirates in BIG EAST Matchup

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Seton Hall University Pirates 74-66 on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Blue & Gray improved to 11-9 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "When you play a talented team like Seton Hall at home you want to be able to win on your court. We came out and played an amazing first quarter which was the big difference in the game. We had another big run in the third quarter coming out of the half which helped but now we need to work on finishing off a team and not allowing them to get back in the game. We are proud of our young ladies that they held on and got the win."
  • "Kelsey Ransom played a tremendous floor game for us tonight. She scored, she helped us rebound, she was all over the court. Kennedy Fauntleroy continues to give us double figures, and when those two are scoring, we're difficult to stop. Graceann came in and hit some big shots and then we had a number of players step up to give us balanced scoring. When we get into the seventies, we like our chances."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas owned the first quarter building a large lead over the Pirates (13-8, 6-5 BIG EAST) through the first 10 minutes.
  • After trading buckets, Georgetown staged an 18-2 run including six points from junior captain Kelsey Ransom and five from sophomore Ariel Jenkins to lead 20-4.
  • A late triple made it 23-8 at the end of the first, but the Blue & Gray had the comfortable advantage.
  • Georgetown moved ahead by as much as 19 early in the second stanza, however, The Hall answered back with four quick points.
  • Midway through the period, SHU would string five quick points together making it 32-19. Georgetown would put together a 6-0 run to keep the Pirates at bay.
  • Seton Hall would stage a 10-0 run over the final 1:13 of action to make it 40-34 in favor of the Hoyas going into the half.
  • The Pirates fought back to cut it to four, but a free throw from sophomore Brianna Scott and back-to-back triples by freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy forced an SHU timeout with GU leading 53-42.
  • The Hoyas would keep it going to end the third as Fauntleroy nailed a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, and Ransom showed some heroics pulling in a long rebound and knocking down the buzzer beater to put the Blue & Gray ahead 60-44.
  • As Seton Hall fought back, senior captain Graceann Bennett was active down low and penetration from Ransom caused problems for the Pirate defense.
  • Despite a late surge from SHU standout Lauren Park-Lane, the Blue & Gray held on down the stretch managing the 74-66 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 22 points including a career-best 14 rebounds for her fourth-career double-double. She also added four assists, a block and a steal.
  • Fauntleroy added 14 points and five boards going 3-6 from beyond the arc, Bennett rounded out those in double figures posting 10 points in the contest.
