Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls in a Close One to Creighton

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team lost a close one to the Creighton University Bluejays 65-57 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Blue & Gray drops to 11-10 overall and 4-8 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "I was pleased with our fight today. We went down by double figures and we came back and gave ourselves a chance to win. I always say, we have success when our two guards are both scoring and today we missed some of that. But we had some other players step up, and Kelsey Ransom continued her great week with another outstanding performance. Now we need to look at where we can improve and get ready for Xavier on Tuesday."
How it Happened
  • The lead went back and forth throughout the first quarter as neither squad could find a rhythm.
  • Both teams played a defensive game, but Creighton (14-6, 8-4 BIG EAST) found some momentum late to lead 12-9 at the end of the period.
  • The Jays would lead by five early in the second quarter before the Blue & Gray was able to cut it to one on a triple from graduate student Kristina Moore.
  • Creighton answered right back with a 6-0 run forcing a Hoya timeout, and Moore drove the lane for two on the next possession.
  • However, turnovers would allow the Bluejays to go up by as much as 11 and lead 28-19 at the half.
  • The Blue & Gray would battle in the third making it a two-possession game on multiple occasions. At the 6:04 mark, a traditional three-point play by junior Jada Claude cut it to three.
  • Creighton continued to hold the Hoyas at bay throughout the period eventually leading 50-37 at the end of the third.
  • It looked as though the Bluejays would run away with it in the fourth, however, the Hoyas continued to fight and cut it to seven on a 10-2 run including five points from junior captain Kelsey Ransom.
  • With the crowd going wild, a layup from Ransom made it a four-point game at 5:46 as the Hoyas were right back in it.
  • At the 1:50 mark, Ransom made a pair of free throws to make it 61-57, and the defense came up with some big stops.
  • Georegtown would get good looks, but they wouldn't fall and GU was forced to foul making the final 65-57.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 24 points including a team-high nine as well as five steals and four assists.
  • Moore added 13 points as the other Hoya in double figures.
  • The Hoyas shot 38.2% (21-55) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 44.6% (25-56) shooting by the Bluejays.
  • GU was outrebounded 40-28 in the game, and Georgetown forced 19 Bluejay turnovers on 12 steals.
  • Lauren Jensen led Creighton with 20 points as one of three Hoyas in double figures.
