Hoyas Hold On for Win at Xavier

CINCINNATI – The Georgetown University women's basketball team got some late 3-pointers from sophomore Brianna Scott and held on to defeat  the Xavier University Musketeers 44-41 on Tuesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Cintas Center. With the win, the Blue & Gray improves to 12-10 overall and 5-8 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "I saw a team out there tonight that didn't play their best game, but they found a way to win through adversity. When you can win on the road, and it's ugly and you're not playing your best and you find a way to come back in the fourth quarter and pull out that victory, it shows a lot about this team and their chemistry. Bri Scott came in and knocked down two big threes, Modesti McConnell hit a big three for us and we were able to piece it together. That shows their character, they know we didn't play well but we found a way to win and we're proud of them for that."
How it Happened
  • An early 7-0 run from Xavier gave the Musketeers (7-15, 0-13 BIG EAST) the 9-4 advantage midway through the first quarter before the Blue & Gray could answer.
  • A putback from junior captain Kelsey Ransom was followed by a Xavier triple and a late free throw from Ransom made it 12-7 in favor of the Musketeers at the end of the first stanza.
  • The Hoyas employed a full-court press to disrupt the XU offense and Scott scored four quick points to pull GU within one early in the second quarter.
  • Ransom was all over the floor getting GU right back in it, and a bucket by sophomore Kaliyah Myricks gave the Blue & Gray its first lead of the game 15-14.
  • In the closing minute of the half, Scott was fouled on a three and hit her shots from the charity stripe while senior captain Graceann Bennett added one of her own.
  • On the last possession, Ransom stole the inbounds and nailed the baseline buzzer beater to make it 23-21 in favor of the Hoyas at the break.
  • GU would build a small five-point lead midway through the third period before Xavier answered with the 3-pointer.
  • Freshman Modesti McConnell knocked down a 3-pointer in the final minute, but a traditional three-point play on the other end made it 34-33 as Xavier led at the end of the third.
  • The Musketeers clung to the lead until Scott stepped up and hit a triple at 6:24 to give GU the lead and then added another.
  • The Hoya defense would prove smothering and GU managed to hold on for the 44-41 victory.
Of Note
  • Scott led the way with 13 points including five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Ransom added 10 points as the other Hoya in double figures and also pulled down a squad-high 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also managed three steals and as many assists in the win.
  • The Hoyas shot 27.8% (15-54) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 29.5% (13-44) shooting by the Musketeers.
  • GU outrebounded Xavier 39-32 in the game, including 16 on the offensive glass, and Georgetown forced 19 Musketeer turnovers on six steals.
  • Aanaya Harris led Xavier with 11 points as one of two Musketeers in double figures.
