Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 5/4 Georgetown Falls at Providence

WASHINGTON – The No. 5/4 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the Providence College Friars 1-0 on Saturday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 8-2-1 on the season and 4-1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars improve to 5-4-3 for the year and 2-1-2 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This was a highly motivated Providence team playing one of the better games we've seen them play this year. There weren't a lot of chances for either team, so credit to them for finding the goal off of a setpiece. We can't dwell on this one for too long, we have Villanova coming in on Wednesday so we are going to take a few things we learned from this game, put them into our toolbelt and move forward."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas had chances in the first half, but could not connect.
  • Midway through, GU was pushing for the goal, however, the Providence defense stood strong and every attempt was stopped.
  • The teams went into the break in a scoreless tie with five shots on goal by the Blue & Gray, and one from the Friars.
  • Providence controlled the momentum for the first 15 minutes of the second half as the Friars searched for a goal, but every attempt was thwarted by the Hoya defense.
  • In the 69th minute, Providence had an opportunity sail just over the crossbar on a counter to keep it scoreless.
  • Everything changed in the 76th minute as a foul in a dangerous position allowed Providence to send in a free kick. The well-placed service found the head of Gevork Diarbian who knocked it just under the crossbar and away from the outstretched hand of keeper Ryan Schewe to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas would battle until the end, but could not find the back of the net, eventually falling 1-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Providence, 15-9, but the Hoyas had six shots on goal while the Friars managed three.
  • GU was awarded seven corner kicks to Providence's four in the game.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe took the loss in the net with two saves.
