Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 8/10 Hoyas Defeat Villanova, 2-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 8/10 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to down the Villanova University Wildcats 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-2-1 on the season and 5-1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats drop to 1-7-4 for the year and 1-4-1 in the league. With the win, Georgetown also locked up a BIG EAST Championship berth. Seeding will be announced in the coming week.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Today was a challenging game because Villanova made the decision to make it really difficult for us. They had huge numbers behind the ball and we spent the first 45 minutes trying to get into dangerous spots to  unlock their defense. The first goal was going to be a hard one to get, and the movement and the play we used was going to be needed along with a great finish. Once we got the goal, the game opened up. I'm proud of the guys that they didn't get frustrated, and found a way to get through a stubborn, organized Villanova team."
How it Happened
  • The Wildcats defense stood strong in the first half resulting in few opportunities for the Blue & Gray.
  • Villanova's one chance was a long shot from outside the box that went over the crossbar.
  • With 15 minutes remaining in the period, Georgetown's Zach Zengue had a quality chance sail high.
  • GU dominated possession, but Villanova had the Hoya defense on its heels on a counter as the header was not on target.
  • The teams went into the break in a deadlock.
  • As Georgetown pushed and the Wildcats sat back, it was a counter where the Blue & Gray changed the match.
  • In the 64th minute, senior Marlon Tabora sent it to Zengue who dribbled unmarked and sent it to Jacob Murrell onsides. The sophomore shot to the back post to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas added another in the 73rd minute as junior Joe Buck saw classmate Kieran Sargeant making a long run across the field. He sent a perfect ball and Sargeant poked it over the head of 'Nova keeper Kent Dickey and into the open net to put GU on top 2-0 which would be the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Villanova, 14-10, and the Hoyas had six shots on goal while the Wildcats managed four.
  • GU was awarded 14 corner kicks while Villanova had none in the game.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Tenzing Manske took the shutout in the net with four saves.
