No. 8/10 Georgetown Ties St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The No. 8/10 Georgetown University men's soccer team drew with the St. John's University Red Storm 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field. With the tie, the Hoyas move to 9-2-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm sits at 8-3-4 for the year and 3-1-3 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "The wind was a huge factor in the game today. Scoring the early goal was important, and when we got to halftime it felt like we were going to be alright. But in the second half, we didn't have as much pop as we were hoping. Credit to St. John's, they're in really good form right now and an excellent team, it was a great BIG EAST matchup. I was happy with how we limited their chances, but in the end, it's disappointing because we had a chance to win the league today and we didn't meet that goal."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas were first to get on the board three minutes into the match with a shot to the upper ninety by Zach Zengue. The sophomore was assisted by centerbacks Kenny Nielsen and Maximus Jennings who sent the ball into the box.
  • The Hoya lead would not last long as St. John's answered in the 17th minute with a goal that the outstretched hand of Hoya keeper Ryan Schewe could not keep out.
  • The 1-1 score stood through the rest of the first half, despite St. John's registering six shots on goal to Georgetown's two.
  • Coming out of the half, Georgetown continued to press, but could not capitalize on an opportunity to retake the lead.
  • The Hoyas had SJU pinned in midway through the half, but could not find the back of the net.
  • The end-to-end battle would continue for the remainder of the match, with neither side able to take advantage, settling the game in a 1-1 draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by St. John's, 10-6, and the Hoyas had four shots on goal while the Red Storm managed six.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks while Villanova had eight in the game.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe took the draw in the net with five saves.
  • Saturday was also Senior Day for the Hoyas as the eight members of the Class of 2024 were honored in a pregame ceremony.
