WASHINGTON – The Georgetown women's soccer team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles on Thursday evening 5-0 in Milwaukee. With the win, Georgetown improves to 9-1-7 (5-0-4 BE) on the season while Marquette slides to 5-8-4 on the season and 2-4-2 in conference play.
Head Coach Dave Nolan
"This was a very important road victory for us with two games left in conference. We are trying to play for the conference championship and also top-two seeding in the conference tournament, so we knew we didn't have a margin for error tonight. It was a challenging night; the weather wasn't great, and it made the surface very slick. At halftime I felt as if we had owned most of the game, but we had a hard time breaking them down in the final third and it was very similar to some games that we have played this year. A coach's dream came to fruition and once we got that first goal, I could see them start to waiver because they have been shut out a few times this year and haven't been able to score. The second goal came pretty hot on top of the first and then once we got the second, they really had no choice but to try and open up. Their players lost a little bit of heart when you would need them to run an extra five yards or throw their body in something. In terms of my own group, I am very proud of the effort tonight as we had some exceptional performances. I thought
Eliza Turner had an exceptional game for us, and it was great to see her score such a great goal.
Maja Lardner chipped in with a goal,
Tatum Lenain chipped in with a goal, it was great to see
Shay Montgomery score her first goal as a Hoya and
Allie Winstanley had a great night with three points on a goal and an assist. We scored five good goals all in the box which is what we have been talking about at training, trying to get more touches in the opponent's box. With the win tonight, it means that going into this last game against Butler on Sunday, I think if we are able to get three more points we will probably be guaranteed a top-two seed and that is what we are hoping for."
