No. 8/7 Georgetown Blanks UConn, 3-0

WASHINGTON – The No. 8/7 Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the UConn Huskies 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field presented by Invesco QQQ. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 8-1-1 on the season and 4-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Huskies drop to 6-5-0 for the year and 2-1-0 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "We came out much more aggressive in the second half, you have to give a huge amount of credit to UConn they came out and just battered us. They were very unlucky not to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead. We're counting ourselves lucky in the first half and we challenged them at halftime to make them regret not taking advantages of those chances. Right now, we score goals and all of our goals were fantastic."
How it Happened
  • UConn was active early on with the most dangerous chance coming just a few minutes in as it was cleared off of the line by GU defender Dominic DeAlmeida.
  • Midway through the half, Georgetown had sustained possession and looked like it had the Huskies on its heels, but the Blue & Gray could not capitalize on the opportunity.
  • In the finals seconds of the half, the Huskies had an open chance sail high to keep it scoreless at the break.
  • UConn once again opened the half with an opportunity, but it was Georgetown who got on the board first as a short corner to Diego Letayf and Kyle Linhares resulted in a ball to the back post and a waiting Maximus Jennings for the header to make it 1-0.
  • As the game began to get more physical and a call resulted in a video review.
  • Just out of the review Jacob Murrell took it to the end line and served it in to Trevor Burns. He centered it to Marlon Tabora who found the back of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
  • Tabora wasn't done yet as he added his second of the match from his left foot on a pass from Joe Buck in the 72nd minute.
  • The Hoya defense would stay strong and avoided the Husky goal as a shot hit the crossbar with a minute to go resulting in the 3-0 decision.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by UConn, 17-11, but the Hoyas had six shots on goal while the Huskies managed four.
  • GU was awarded five corner kicks to UConn's 10 in the game.
  • Senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe took the shutout in the net with four saves for the day.
