WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team played the second-seeded Xavier University Musketeers to a 0-0 draw in the BIG EAST Championship at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland on Sunday morning. The tie went to penalty kicks and the Musketeers won the league title taking kicks, 5-4. With the draw, the No. 3/6 Hoyas move to a mark of 13-2-3 on the year, while the Musketeers head to 9-3-6 for the season.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "A lot of credit has to go to Xavier, they weren't at 100 percent and they managed it really well. Xavier executed their game plan and this was one of the few times we've been shut out all year. I'm proud of the guys, they never stopped fighting. Whenever you go to penalty kicks, you look back on the little moments that could have changed that and, for us, the problem was that it went to penalty kicks. But this was really good preparation for what the NCAA Tournament is going to be and we're excited for the draw tomorrow and hoping to have an extended postseason run."
How it Happened
- The Hoyas pressed early, registering three shots on goal in the first 25 minutes of action. Still, going on the attack, Xavier nearly headed in a cross in the 24th minute, but goalkeeper Ryan Schewe came up with the save to keep the score 0-0.
- As the game settled in, the end-to-end action continued, but neither side could find a goal to open the scoring in the first half.
- Throughout the second half, both Georgetown and Xavier continued to battle but neither side could break through. Georgetown had several chances to score but could not connect to find the goal.
- With 11 minutes remaining in the match, the Hoyas ramped up the attack with a series of throw-ins that led to two shots by Kenny Nielsen and Blaine Mabie, respectively.
- The Xavier defense was able to ward off the Hoya threat, and the teams battled as the clock ran down.
- Neither Georgetown nor Xavier could find a goal in the 90 minutes, sending the match into overtime.
- Each team had an opportunity in the extra 20 minutes, but neither would find the game winner resulting in a scoreless draw and going to penalty kicks to decide the league winner.
- In penalty kicks, Schewe managed one save but the XU keeper tallied two as Xavier won the title taking PK's 5-4.
