Hoyas Down Hawks 61-50 in Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a big second-half push to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Hawks 61-50 on Monday evening in the team's season opener at McDonough Arena. The Hoya victory came in front of a crowd of 1,503 as Georgetown hosted a pink out game in honor of Head Coach Tasha Butts who passed away in October. With the win, the Hoyas sit at 1-0 on the season and the Hawks drop to 0-1 to start the year.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Every organization and every team has an identity, and tonight began building our identity. We're going to lock up defensively, we're going to rebound the basketball. We had 45 rebounds tonight, and it shows we want to get everything. We need to get better in our transition game and we missed some opportunities, but as long as we continue to do what we do every single day it will eventually click. And when it clicks for this group, it's going to be special. This is a special group already, but then it will really be special."
How it Happened
  • Junior Kaliyah Myricks got GU on the board and the Hoyas maintained the lead for the entire contest.
  • Late in the first quarter, a jumper from graduate student Graceann Bennett paired with an and-1 from junior Brianna Scott pushed the Georgetown advantage to seven, 21-14.
  • UMES would hit a layup in the final minute to make it 21-16 after 10 minutes of action.
  • The Hawks battled back in the second quarter cutting the lead to just a possession or a tie on eight occasions.
  • With each bucket, the Hoya defense got a stop and converted on the other end to cling to the lead.
  • In the final two minutes of the first half, graduate transfer Mya Bembry and Scott both hit layups as GU went into the half leading 33-29.
  • In the second half, the duo of Scott and senior captain Kelsey Ransom took over as a 9-3 run built the lead to 10.
  • Following a UMES bucket, five quick points from the pair put GU ahead 47-36.
  • The fourth quarter belonged to the Hoyas as Ransom and sophomore Victoria Rivera both hit triples.
  • The Hawks would not find a way back into the game as Georgetown cruised to the 61-50 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom and Scott both managed a double-double to start the season.
  • Ransom led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Scott added 14 and a squad-high 12 boards.
  • Bennett added six points as well as 10 rebounds, and Rivera had nine points in the contest.
  • The Hoyas shot 41.0% (25-61) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 30.5% (18-59) shooting by the Hawks.
  • GU outrebounded UMES 45-34 in the game, and Georgetown forced 11 Hawk turnovers on two steals.
  • Zamara Haynes led Maryland Eastern Shore with 18 points as one of two Hawks in double figures.
