Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Dominant Performance Leads Hoyas Past Owls

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a hot shooting night and smothering defense to handle the Temple University Owls, 68-45, on Thursday evening in the team's first road game at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 2-0 on the season and the Owls drop to 1-1 for the year.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We locked in on our principles and the team did a great job of executing on both ends of the floor. They trusted the scout, they trusted who we are and they trusted what we want to do and we ended up with the W for that. I'm proud of them, they did a great job in all aspects. We're going to celebrate tonight and then move forward tomorrow."
How it Happened
  • Temple jumped out to a one-point lead, but a 9-0 run including four points from senior Kelsey Ransom and a triple from sophomore Victoria Rivera made it 13-5 midway through the first.
  • Temple would answer with a 3-pointer, but GU went on another tear posting an 11-0 run including triples from Rivera and junior Brianna Scott as well as a traditional three-point play by graduate transfer Mya Bembry. At the end of the first, the Blue & Gray led 24-8.
  • Ransom opened the second quarter with a layup, but Temple came back with four quick points.
  • Runs made the difference as a steal from Bembry and a layup by Ransom sparked an 11-0 run as GU led by 24 late in the first half.
  • The Hoyas would continue to dominate the game, going into the break leading 39-17.
  • Temple struggled to find an answer for the tandem of Ransom and graduate student Graceann Bennett as GU continued to build the lead throughout the third period.
  • The Owls would start to heat up late, but Georgetown still maintained a significant advantage leading 56-33 at the end of three.
  • Temple cut it to 18 in the fourth, but never truly threatened as the Hoya defense smothered the Owls and GU cruised to the 68-45 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds as well as five assists and four steals for an all-around performance.
  • Bennett added 12 points and six rebounds, while Bembry added 12 points and four boards.
  • The Hoyas shot an impressive 52.8% (28-53) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 31.5% (17-54) shooting by the Owls.
  • GU outrebounded Temple 38-22 in the game, and Georgetown forced 16 Owl turnovers on nine steals.
  • Rayne Tucker and Tarriyonna Gary led Temple with 12 points apiece.
