Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hoyas Defeat Demon Deacons, 60-44

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team made it seven in a row with a victory over the Wake Forest University Demon Deacons 60-44 on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in GU's final home nonconference matchup of the season. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-1 on the season and the Deacs drop to 3-8 for the year.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "Sometimes people get bored doing the same thing the right way over and over again. In the huddle right before Mya's (Bembry) tip in, I told them to stay the course and at the proper time we would reap the harvest. The team that was mentally focused for the longest period of time was going to win the game today, and I was proud that we focused on the defensive end and played Georgetown basketball to pull through with the win."
How it Happened
  • Both teams were cold to start the game, but Georgetown took the lead on a jumper from graduate student Graceann Bennett who beat the shot clock to make it 7-5 with 1:06 remaining in the period.
  • Free throws would give the Blue & Gray the 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Wake began the second period with a triple, but the Hoyas gained some momentum on a 3-pointer from Bennett which sparked a 13-0 run as GU took the commanding 22-10 lead.
  • The Demon Deacons began to chip away, and a late run from the visitors made it 27-21 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the half.
  • The squads traded buckets to start the second half, but six quick points from the Deacs forced a Hoya timeout as WFU cut the lead to two, 30-28.
  • An and-1 from senior Kelsey Ransom out of the timeout gave the Hoyas some breathing room, but the Demon Deacons did not go away and continued to pound it inside for points in the paint.
  • After three quarters, Georgetown led 39-34.
  • Early in the fourth, Wake would knock down a 3-pointer in the corner to tie it at 39.
  • Ahead by one with 5:15 remaining, it was Ransom that would take over, nailing a pair from the charity stripe and then hitting a fadeaway to make it 49-44.
  • Down the stretch, the Hoya defense got some big stops, and the squad ended the game on a 15-0 run resulting in the 60-44 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way for the Hoyas with 22 points to go along with five rebounds.
  • Bennett added 11 points and four boards in the contest.
  • Junior Brianna Scott pulled down a squad-best eight rebounds and also had six blocks and eight points, while graduate student Mya Bembry had five assists in the win.
  • The Hoyas shot 44.4% (20-45) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed just 25.9% (15-58) shooting by the Deacs.
  • GU outrebounded WFU 35-33, and Georgetown forced 14 Demon Deacon turnovers on seven steals.
  • Alexandria Scruggs led Wake Forest with 13 points, and Kaia Harrison added 10 as the two Deacs in double figures.
  • GU's 9-1 record is the best start for the Hoyas since the BIG EAST Conference began sponsoring women's basketball. The best start in program history dates back to a 16-1 record to open the 1979-80 campaign.
  • The last time Georgetown won seven-consecutive games was the 2016-17 season.
